we want everyone to be the same here (as I watch the "OTHERS" all walk out slamming door one by one)but seriously being raised in New Orleans, which you all know is the drag queen capital of the world, people just accepted people for what they are, didn't ostracize them for what they were, and didn't ask -- I mean it's New Orleans, we allow sex and drugs on the streets before lent (called Mardi Gras). so I grew up with a tolerance for all as I've just about seen it all. even during the intensity of desegregation, my mom never taught her kids to hate others. and we look out for each other in New Orleans, as in you try and beat down one, you'll even have old ladies coming after like "yeah try me too"
the only irony, is black kids in high school would tease me for having white friends, which would go in one ear and out the other. they didn't notice the asian friends, the spanish friends and the other black friends, just the white friends, which ironically, were german, jewish, dutch and english, and some whose parents were once active Klan members, but we somehow managed to find a common ground and enjoy the differences and company.
the number one thing about New Orleans is no matter how rich, how famous, you better be respectful and nice to people or your mother and whole family will be called and you will be shamed for it. and I have several gay friends, however, their lifestyle isn't a daily issue we discuss, their daily life issues are which are common to everyone (politics, money, entertainment, etc.)
