4 wounded in 3 South Side shootings

Four men were wounded in three apparently unrelated shootings early Wednesday on the South Side.

At 12:07 a.m. in the Chatham neighborhood, a 22-year-old man said he heard gunfire and discovered he was shot in the right thigh in the 8200 block of South Dobson Avenue, according to a report from the police First Deputy Superintendent’s office.

The victim was standing in front of his residence when the shots were fired, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak, who said the man shot was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.

The shooter was unknown, according to the report.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating and no one was in custody as of 7:15 a.m., Kubiak said.

In the Englewood neighborhood, two men standing in the 7300 block of South Ada Street were shot about 1 a.m., a source said.

One man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was driven by a friend to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center and was later transferred in an unidentified condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the source said.

The other man suffered a graze wound and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, the source said.

In the Hamilton Park neighborhood, a 51-year-old man was shot during an argument with an acquaintance in the 6500 block of South Carpenter Street, the source said.

The man was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the thigh, the source said.

No one was in custody for the Englewood shootings and Wentworth Area detectives are probing them.

The three shootings do not appear to be related.

now notice the outcry at an officer involved shooting in a county that has the nations HIGHEST murder capital rate amongst black men, as in they're killing each other routinely. but oooooh noooo, once an officer gets invovled, it's bullshit like, "who's protecting us?". I guess the criminals are protecting those same protesters because no one was outraged enough to stand up for their community BEFORE an officer involved shooting!

Langley Park Incident Draws Attention to Surge in Pr. George's Deaths

Prince George's County police have shot and killed more than twice as many people this year as in all of last year and more than in any year since before 2004, when allegations of excessive force led federal authorities to begin monitoring the department.

County police have killed seven people this year, up from three in 2007. There have been two fatal shootings this year by police in the District.

In the most recent fatal police shooting in Prince George's, Manuel de Jesus Espina was killed Aug. 16 in Langley Park by an off-duty county officer moonlighting as a security guard, and the circumstances heightened concerns about officers' use of deadly force.

Espina, who was unarmed, was fatally shot during what police say was an attempt to arrest him after he was spotted with an open container of alcohol. Hundreds turned out last week for a vigil during which civil rights leaders demanded an independent investigation into the shooting.

"We are having too many incidents like this one," said June White Dillard, president of the county's chapter of the NAACP, drawing applause as she locked arms with Latino leaders at the vigil. Residents, she said, "are very familiar, too familiar, with police brutality and excessive force."

Mark Spencer, inspector general for Prince George's police, cautioned against drawing conclusions about the increase in fatal police shootings this year, saying officers are encountering increasingly dangerous situations.

"More people are armed, carrying around firearms, and more willing to shoot at police officers," he said.

The shootings have become a flashpoint in a county already rattled by incidents that cast law enforcement in an unfavorable light: In June, a 19-year-old inmate suspected of killing a county police officer was allegedly strangled in the county jail. And late last month, sheriff's deputies and police narcotics officers raided the home of the mayor of Berwyn Heights as part of a drug investigation. The mayor, whose two dogs were killed during the raid, has been cleared of suspicion.

Police shootings and aggressive tactics have long been a source of tension in the county. The department's canine unit, which was responsible for 800 biting incidents in a seven-year period ending in the mid-1990s, was released last year from federal oversight.

Submitting to federal oversight in 2004 on the broader issue of excessive force allowed the county to avoid legal action by the Justice Department after 15 shootings, five of them fatal, occurred in as many months. At the time, FBI agents were also investigating four incidents in which suspects died after being injured in struggles with county police.

With more than four months remaining in 2008, county officers, on and off duty, have drawn their weapons and fired at suspects 14 times, or almost every other week. The last three shootings, all since late July, have been fatal.

Not included in those numbers is a domestic incident in January in which a county police officer critically wounded her fiance and then fatally shot herself in her Charles County home with her service weapon.

77 Arrested In Probe of Drug Deals In District

Authorities announced yesterday the arrests of 77 people suspected of selling or supplying drugs in the Trinidad section of Northeast Washington.

Eight of the suspects were arrested yesterday, officials said. The others have been apprehended since June in an investigation by D.C. police and federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Police have been focusing on the Trinidad area because of a surge in homicides since spring, including a stretch in which seven people were killed in nine hours. The most recent killing in the neighborhood occurred Saturday in a drive-by on Holbrook Terrace NE.

"There are three things driving violent crime," D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said last night at a news conference in the area. "That's drugs, guns and gang and crew activity."

Lanier said that authorities have "documented presence" of gangs in Trinidad, including the Bloods, a gang associated with the West Coast. She declined to say whether the Bloods have been tied to the drug activities in Trinidad or the violence there. Other investigators have said the Bloods appear to be playing a bigger role in drug sales in the area.

As part of the narcotics investigation, officials said they have seized cocaine, heroin and marijuana worth about $126,000; about $46,000 in cash; 14 guns; and four vehicles. They have executed search warrants at 16 locations, mostly in Trinidad.

In yesterday's sweep, authorities seized about $1,200 worth of crack, three guns and about $3,000 in cash.

The drug investigation is part of a broader law enforcement effort that has included occasional checkpoints since June of motorists driving into the Trinidad area. The checkpoints have generated praise from some neighborhood leaders but also controversy. Some residents filed lawsuit in federal court, saying that the stops are unconstitutional.

Lanier was joined last night by U.S. Attorney Jeffrey A. Taylor and Shawn Johnson, the special agent who heads the DEA's Washington field office.

Taylor said authorities are gathering evidence and could build a larger federal case. Johnson said the DEA is devoting more resources this year to the District and that Trinidad is a priority.

"We're here indefinitely. We're not going any place," Johnson said.

13-Year-Old Boy Killed In Harlem Shooting

09/06/2008 -- Police are investigating a shooting in Harlem that left a 13-year-old boy dead and two other teens injured.

The boy was shot in the chest at about 7:30 p.m. Friday on West 144th Street, police said.

The two other teenagers who suffered gunshot wounds were hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

No arrests were made in the case as of early Saturday.

2nd Suspect Arrested In Baseball Bat Attack Case

NEW YORK - New York City police have arrested two men in a baseball bat attack on a Boston-area radio host that was caught on tape.

The victim, Pelagio De La Cruz, hosts a weekday morning talk show at WESX-AM in Chelsea, Mass. He suffered severe injuries to his jaw and an eye in the Sept. 14 attack on a Bronx street.

A surveillance video shows two muggers following De La Cruz to an apartment building. The radio host was knocked to the ground and hit repeatedly with the bat. The muggers got his wallet and cell phone.

Police say the main attacker and an accomplice were arrested Monday on charges of attempted murder, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

De La Cruz was in the Bronx to visit his three children.

Police Intensify Hunt For Brooklyn Party Gunman
10-Year-Old Denia Kearse In Good Condition After Being Shot In Shoulder
BROOKLYN (CBS) ― A 10-year-old girl has been upgraded to good condition at Kings County Hospital after getting hit by gunfire at a block party.

Denia Kearse was in the crowd on President Street in Crown Heights on Saturday night. Shots rang out, and she was hit in the shoulder, police said.

She was taken to a nearby hospital and her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police don't think she was the intended target in the shooting.

Kearse's uncle described how his niece was hit.

"She heard the first shot go off, so she started to run. The second bullet caught her. She then started bleeding," said Craig Grant.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the police.

Bronx Narcotics Operation Ends In Gunfire, Arrest

NEW YORK - An overnight police narcotics operation in the Bronx ended in gunfire and an arrest.

An officer fired a single shot at the armed suspect, who was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. on a street in the Fordham neighborhood, police said.

Police recovered a weapon at the scene but have not released any other details.
