Two teens shot on South Side in gang-related attack, cops say

Chicago police said two teenagers were shot on the city's South Side Saturday afternoon in what appears to be a gang-related attack.

Two 17-year-old boys were shot just after 4 p.m. in the 6100 block of South King Drive, said Officer JoAnn Taylor.

One was shot in the ankle and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition, and the other was shot in the leg and taken to St. Bernard Hospital in unknown condition.

Further details were not immediately available.

10 Dead, At Least 13 Wounded In Weekend Violence
CHICAGO (STNG) ― Ten people were murdered and at least 13 wounded during a violent weekend in Chicago and the western suburbs.

Friday night, two 19-year-old men were shot -- one fatally -- during a robbery in the South Side's Park Manor neighborhood. The men were shot at 7100 S. King Dr. about 10:28 p.m. Friday, according to Fire Media Affairs Asst. Director Eve Rodriguez.

One victim, later identified as Marshaun Melchor of 7056 S. Eberhart Ave. was dead on the scene with a gunshot wound to the face, according to police News Affairs Officer David Banks. The other man was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the chest, Rodriguez said.

It appears the people involved in the shooting were playing a dice game, according to Calumet Area detectives.

Early Saturday in west suburban Maywood, four men -- not believed to have any gang affiliations -- were gunned down while sitting in a parked car.

Police responded at 12:16 a.m. to a call of shots fired in the area of 19th and Harrison streets and found the four young men shot in a parked car, according to Maywood police.

They were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood where three of them died from their wounds. The fourth man was in critical condition.

Kent Flowers, of the 1900 block of West Harrison Street in Maywood, Oscar Pritchett of the 1000 block of South 10th Avenue in Maywood and Devin Stokes of the 1200 block of South 16th Avenue in Maywood were all pronounced dead at Loyola. All three were 18, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

A motive for the shootings is not known and Maywood police are conducting a homicide investigation.

A little more than an hour later, west of downtown Chicago, another man was fatally gunned down while driving on the Eisenhower Expressway.

About 1:40 a.m. Saturday, Illinois State Police responded to a shooting in the eastbound lanes of the expressway at South Morgan Street and found a Cadillac, which had crashed into the left concrete median.

Troopers noticed several bullet holes on the right side of the vehicle and found 26-year-old Antoine Fountain in the driver's seat suffering multiple gunshot wounds, according to ISP District Chicago Master Sgt. S. Nowak.

Fountain was taken to John Stroger Hospital where he later died, Nowak said.

A witness reported seeing a blue car and a white car driving alongside the Cadillac and shooting at its driver, Nowak said. Both vehicles fled the scene after the Cadillac struck the median.

Saturday afternoon, a woman was stabbed to death in a South Side motel.

Police responded to a domestic disturbance at 7621 S. Cottage Grove Ave. and found the woman dead, News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.

A 70-year-old man who apparently had a "prostitute relationship" with Thomas is in custody for the murder Monday morning, according to a Calumet Area police sergeant. The man is not the woman's husband, according to the sergeant, who said as of 2 a.m. no charges had been approved.

An autopsy Sunday found Thomas died from a stab wound to the neck, and her death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.

Also on Saturday afternoon, a man attempting to drive his friend to the hospital following a gang-related shooting ended up crashing into a pole in the West Side's Lawndale neighborhood. The man who had been shot died upon arrival at the hospital.

The man was in a vehicle with his friend at 1506 S. Central Park Ave. about 1:30 p.m. when a group of men began firing shots into the car, Ogden District police said. He was shot four times and his friend began driving him to Mount Sinai Hospital.

The friend, who was in a hurry to get to the hospital, collided with another car at 3100 W. Ogden Ave., police said. He then lost control of the car and crashed into a light pole. No one was injured in the traffic crash.

Gregory Herndon, 38, died at Mount Sinai, a medical examiner's office spokesman said. Police said the shooting was gang related.

Early Sunday, two shooters fatally shot a man in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood on the Near West Side.

Jason Mueller, 29, of the 1500 block of North Wells Street, was shot near Wolcott and Grand avenues, a spokesman for the medical examiner's office said. Mueller was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 6:23 a.m.

A witness told police they heard three shots just before 6 a.m., looked out of their home window and saw the man lying on the street, police said.

Two offenders were seen walking southbound on Wolcott, police said.

On Sunday night, the badly burned body of a man was found in the trunk of a vehicle on fire in a secluded area in the Far South Side's Riverdale neighborhood.

Emergency crews responded to the 1000 block of East 130th Street at 8:37 p.m. for reports of a vehicle on fire, according to police News Affairs.
While the flames were being extinguished, firefighters discovered charred human remains in the trunk, police said. The body was that of a man and the vehicle was in a secluded prairie-like area, according to police.

The medical examiner's office said they received a "badly charred" body found in the trunk of a vehicle. The man's identity has not been determined.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.

Also on Saturday night, a man was fatally shot in the South Side Hamilton Park neighborhood after several people in a group began fighting and one man opened fire.

The 24-year-old man was standing with a group on the corner of West 79th and South Aberdeen streets about 10:15 p.m. when several people within the group began fighting. One man pulled out a gun and fired multiple times, striking the victim several times, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.

Jamel Houston of 12000 block of South State Street was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 12:33 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

The man was shot 11 times on multiple areas of his body, according to Gresham District police, who said the shooting happened at 7956 S. Aberdeen. No one else was injured.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating and said no one was in custody early Monday.

Aside from the murders, at least 13 other people were wounded in gun violence in Chicago and the western suburbs Friday through Sunday.

Mother Fatally Slashed In Front Of 2 Children

NEW YORK -

A 32-year-old woman died after her throat was slashed, and police arrested her 21-year-old boyfriend.

Authorities called to a Queens apartment on Monday evening found Veronica Rivera with her throat cut. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested Pedro Ayala, and charges were pending. He was taken to an area hospital with a hand injury. Authorities recovered a knife at the scene.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Rivera was killed in front of her infant son and 9-year-old daughter. Brown said the daughter is receiving counseling.

Teen Found Dead In Minivan

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Police are investigating the death of a man in Mount Vernon.

The man was found shot to death at South Ninth Avenue and West Third Street.

Police received a call of shots fired at about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The victim, Shomari Knox, 19, of Mount Vernon, was shot in the side.

Police said Knox was likely shot by an illegal handgun.

The latest fatality marks the seventh homicide in the city this year.

Police warned potential wrongdoers, "You will go to jail."

Detectives are canvassing the area and Mayor Clinton Young has authorized them to use whatever resources are necessary to end the violence in the area.

A medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Young said he would beef up patrols in this area because this type of violence only seems to happen on one side of town, he said.

Young spoke to the family upon their arrival at the scene. He said, "How do you console a grandmother whose grandson was murdered?"

The investigation is ongoing.

Man Killed In Bronx Double Shooting

NEW YORK - Police are investigating a double shooting that left one man dead in the Bronx on Tuesday night.

A 20-year-old man was fatally shot in the head at E. 165th Street in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, according to police. He was found dead on a bench outside a housing complex.

A 13-year-old boy was also shot in the arm and thigh. Police said he was taken to Lincoln Hospital where he is in stable condition.

Police said the shootings happened around 11:30 p.m.

Police are searching for at least one shooting suspect, but no arrests have been made.

Man Accused Of Stealing Acres Of Brooklyn Land

NEW YORK - For nearly a decade, one man turned four acres of land in East New York into a booming business -- a parking lot for hundreds of trucks and cars. But police arrested Darren Miller Tuesday saying the lot was never his to use -- that most of those acres belong to New York City.

Miller charged about $200 per vehicle per month to park on the land along Erskine Street near the Belt Parkway. Hundreds of tractor-trailers and other vehicles were ordered removed Tuesday when police moved in to shut the site down.

Miller's lawyer called his client a "small businessman" who under the theory of "adverse possession" should now rightfully own the property. "If you can find five acres of land, surround it with a fence and stay on it and operate it for 10 years -- you can do it too," attorney Vincent Gerardi said. Gerardi went on to call the police raid "outlandish and oppressive."

Investigators said Miller was arrested on trespassing and other criminal charges when he refused to close up shop. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes is expected to hold a news conference about Miller's alleged land grab Wednesday.

Police said they found numerous stolen cars on the property and that the yard was also being used as an illegal dump. Dozens of truck drivers were ordered to get their vehicles off the property.

Driver Keith Taylor said for years he parked four trucks there thinking the lot was legitimate. He said he does not know where to park his trucks now on such short notice. "Where am I going to go? I can't park them on the street," he said.

Miller's lawyer said he had been involved in a civil suit against the city since 2005 hoping a court would agree the city land now belongs to his client. "It is an honest and decent business," he said. But now Miller will be arraigned in criminal court Wednesday.

Elderly Woman Choked, Robbed In Elevator

NEW YORK --
An attack of an elderly woman in Brooklyn captured on a surveillance camera is as brutal as it is shocking.

As the 85-year-old victim tried to get out of the elevator on the fifth floor of a Brooklyn apartment building, a man grabbed her by the throat and lifted her into the air. The woman waved her in desperation as the man choked the air out of her, leaving her injured on the floor of the elevator. The suspect made off with the woman's purse and cane. The woman had $900 in her purse.

The suspect is then seen on tape escaping down a flight of stairs at 1015 Washington Ave. in Crown Heights. Police said the assault could be the man’s 10th this summer and they fear he might attack again.

The tape shows the man following the woman into the building before he choked her in order to steal her money, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about the suspect who is in his 20s or early 30s and about 6 feet tall to call them at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Man Arrested In Connection With Robbing Elderly Woman

NEW YORK -

A man accused of choking an 85-year-old woman in an elevator and stealing her cane and cash was arrested after a detective saw the surveillance video and recognized him from a similar assault, police said Thursday.

The incident in the elevator was caught on surveillance tape.

The Aug. 14 mugging of Lillian France was the latest in a dozen assaults in Brooklyn this summer in which a man attacked and robbed victims from behind in stairwells, elevators and lobbies. At least five, including France, were choked.

Cornelius Abson, 36, was arrested Wednesday after making statements implicating himself in the attack on France, and he has been linked to at least one other assault, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. Charges were pending.

Police also said he had a history of assaults on older people.

Abson was living at a halfway house in Brooklyn and was in a work-release program in Manhattan after being released from prison in May, police said. There was no phone number listed at the address provided by police and authorities weren't sure if he had an attorney.

The footage from last week's attack shows a man trailing France into a building elevator and pouncing on her from behind as she is about to get off. He grabs her bag and cane and takes off down the hall. Police say he made off with $900 that France had just withdrawn from a bank to give to her grandnieces.

The break in the case came when longtime Brooklyn detective Matthew Walker saw the surveillance footage on the news and recognized the attacker. Walker had arrested Abson six years ago in a similar mugging for which Abson was convicted and served five years in prison. He said he recognized Abson from the tape.

"It shows that veteran detectives have long memories," Kelly said. "This was outstanding work."

Detective Mary Sheehan, who questioned Abson, said he wrote an apology to France, saying he was a drug addict and "the person that did this is not necessarily the person that he is."

Abson had been arrested 11 times on charges of robbery, grand larceny and criminal mischief and was in prison at least twice.

The attacks have frightened residents in the Crown Heights, Flatbush and Kensington sections of Brooklyn, and police have beefed up patrols in those areas.

France remained hospitalized Thursday with high blood pressure.

Her niece, Claire France, said she could barely watch the surveillance video.

"My god, I wish it were me," she said. "I'm younger, I would bounce back easier."

1 dead, 1 injured in South Side shooting

A man wounded in a double shooting on Chicago's South Side early Thursday has died from his injuries, authorities said.

Mataniel Caldwell, 24, was walking with the other victim in the 7700 block of South Marshfield Avenue about 1 a.m. when they got into a confrontation with a man who pulled a handgun, police said.

Caldwell, who lived in the 11600 block of South Yale Avenue, was hit in the neck and abdomen and pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

His companion, 25, was shot multiple times and also taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was reported in serious condition.

One of the victims was believed to have gang affiliations, police said, but it's unclear if the shooting was gang-related or what prompted the confrontation.

No one was in custody.

Father Charged In Beating Death Of Toddler

NEW YORK --

The mother of a three-year-old Brooklyn girl who was allegedly beaten to death by her father has been arraigned on child endangerment charges.

Kimberly Cantos, 23, did not enter a plea during her court appearance Friday.

Police said she was aware that her husband was abusing daughter, Ginelis Jimenez, but did not report it.

Ginelis' father, 25-year-old Michael Jimenez, is charged with murder, manslaughter, assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

On Thursday, police responded to a call of the unconscious and unresponsive child on MacDougal Street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. She weighed only 24 pounds.

EMS transported the child to Interfaith Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Thursday.

The Medical Examiner’s Office said she died of blunt impact injuries to her head, torso and extremities. The victim also had liver and intestinal lacerations, a contusion to her lungs and rib fractures, the medical examiner said. It was classified as child abuse syndrome and ruled a homicide.

Ginelis Jimenez allegedly had her arm broken by Michael Jimenez in January. Kimberly Centos is alleged to have heard her daughter’s arm snap and then her scream. Law enforcement officials told News 4 New York she did nothing to help the child or prevent future injuries.

In June, Michael Jimenez allegedly beat his daughter and broke her collarbone before throwing her into a bedroom, News 4 New York has learned from law enforcement sources. Again, Kimberly Centos is accused of doing nothing to stop the alleged abuse.

Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the statement given to police by Michael Jimenez, he was bathing his daughter when he grabbed her by the leg, causing her to fall and hit her head in the tub. He apparently realized something was wrong and took the girl, who looked dazed and was vomiting, out of the bathtub.

He indicated to police that he grabbed her by the neck and shoulders and started to shake her roughly, presumably to revive her, according to the report. Officials said that could account for the liver and intestinal lacerations. He did not call 911, however.

The victim’s 1-year-old brother has a broken rib as a result of the father throwing him into a toilet, law enforcement sources told News 4 New York. He has been charged with this as well. The couple’s 1-year-old son is currently in the care of child services.

Police: Woman, 50, Stabbed By Random Man Waiting In Her Yard

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. -- A 50-year-old woman was stabbed by an apparently random man who was waiting on her property and crept up behind her when she came home, police said.

The stabbing happened in a residential community in Oceanside at about 10:20 p.m. Thursday.

Police said the victim was stabbed as she was exiting her vehicle that was parked in the driveway of her home on Freeman Avenue.

Diego Deleon, 25, of Island Park was waiting in the woman's yard for some reason, although police aren't sure why, and stabbed her once in the torso when she got out of her car.

The woman, shocked, screamed and Deleon fled, jumping over a fence onto a golf course, police said. Deleon then jumped into a pond to wash the victim's blood off his body and walked west of Waukena Avenue.

A police officer saw Deleon wet with blood on his hands and took him into custody less than an hour after the stabbing.

Police said the victim and Deleon did not know each other. After being stabbed, the victim was able to run to a neighbor's home. The neighbor called 911 and administered first aid.

The knife plunged deeply into the woman, affecting internal organs. She was in surgery for five hours.

The knife was recovered in Deleon's possession. He was charged with second-degree attempted murder and possession of a dangerous weapon in the fourth degree.

Deleon will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.
