NEW YORK --

Police are looking into an early morning sexual assault of a woman in SoHo.

According to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, the woman was returning from her job in Brooklyn around 4 a.m. when she was followed by a man who asked her for a cigarette. She she gave him one, police said.

The 19-year-old victim went into her residence at Prince and Sullivan Streets, and the man continued to follow her upstairs where he then accosted her, Kelly said.

He then dragged her downstairs and sexually assaulted, Kelly said.

The suspect is described as a black male and he was wearing a blue hat and white shirt.

He's short and has a pock marks on his face, police said.

Detective Slashed; 2 Robbery Suspects Shot, 1 Fatally

WNBC-TV
updated 12:11 p.m. ET, Thurs., May. 29, 2008

NEW YORK - An off-duty New York City Police detective has shot two men, killing one, after they attacked and slashed him and a receptionist during a robbery attempt. The two robbers repotedly thought the condo building was a hotel.

The incident happened at 126 Baxter St., one block north of Canal Street, at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Two men slashed a female desk clerk, NYPD Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters early Thursday morning. Off-duty Detective Martin Carrano was talking to her as they approached her, he said.

The two men slashed the detective then escaped onto the sidewalk just south of Hester Street, Kelly said. They attacked the woman, who has not been identified, with razor-like objects, he said.

Carrano fatally shot one of the men in the abdomen, Kelly said. The other man is in stable condition at St. Vincent's, he said.

Carrano and the woman are both being treated for non life threatening injuries, Kelly said. The officer was transported to Bellevue Hospital, News 4 New York has learned.

Carrano shot a total of 10 shots, Kelly said. A breathalyzer administered to the detective was determined to be negative.

Kelly said Carrano had met the desk clerk, Artenida Gjeli, earlier this month, when she came into the 114th precinct to file a complaint about an abusive ex-boyfriend. It is unclear if the ex-boyfrined was involved in Wednesday night's incident, but Kelly said the ex-boyfriend had been calling the female clerk.

Kelly said the woman called the detective in attempt to stop the ex-boyfriend from calling her.

WNBC-TV
updated 2:52 p.m. ET, Fri., May. 30, 2008

NEW YORK - Two off-duty police officers walking along a Manhattan street were jumped by a group of would-be robbers who attacked using a chair, officials say.

Police said the officers and a cousin of one of them were near 164th Street and Amsterdam in Washington Heights early Friday when five men approached them.

They said one of the men exchanged words with an officer and started a fist fight with him before pulling a wooden folding chair from a nearby pile of trash and hitting him.

The armed officer shot the man in the neck, police said.

That man and two more are in custody. Two others are being sought.

One of the men stole a cell phone from an officer during the melee, police said.

The officers and the man who was shot weren't badly injured.

NYPD Officer Shoots Man Trying To Mug His Wife
Gun Used In Bronx Police Involved Shooting

WNBC-TV
updated 8:51 a.m. ET, Mon., June. 2, 2008

NEW YORK - Police said a man who grabbed a woman and her 3-year-old daughter in an elevator at a Bronx apartment building has been shot and killed by the woman's husband, an off-duty officer.

Investigators carefully combed through evidence at the scene of the shooting -- 314 East 201 St. overnight. They said it appears the deadly force used by the off-duty officer was justified.

A man identified as Carlos Rios followed the 30-year-old woman and her daughter into the elevator at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

The woman and her child got off on the third floor and Rios followed them.

Police said Rios grabbed the woman and her daughter from behind as they were getting out and threatened them with a loaded handgun.

The woman screamed, alerting the off-duty officer, who ran to her aid, authorities said.

Police said the off-duty officer shot Rios in the torso.

"The officer fired shots; the individual was struck," said NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. "He ran out of the building; he ran around the corner and just two car lengths in from the intersection he fell from the street."

Rios was found by responding officers. Police said the gun he was carrying was recovered nearby.

Neighbors said they understood why the off-duty officer pulled the trigger.

"That guy was trying to take his family, you know," said Pablo DeLeon.

"If it was any other man then probably she would have been robbed or killed or whatever; something could have happened," said James Osei-Owusu.

The wife and daughter were not harmed. Police said the officer did identify himself before the shooting.

"There were several witnesses who heard the officer say, 'Police, don't move,' and heard his wife call for help prior to that ... It sounds like she was very lucky indeed," Kelly said.

The officer, who is not being identified, was taken to the hospital to be treated for trauma, authorities said.

Marine, back from Iraq, shot dead in his home town

On leave from the violence he had survived in the war in Iraq, a young Marine was so wary of crime on the streets of his own home town that he carried only $8 to avoid becoming a robbery target.

Despite his caution, Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, 21, was shot point-blank in the neck during a robbery at a bus stop.

Feeding and breathing tubes kept him alive 41/2 months, until he died of an infection on May 18.

Two men have been charged in the attack, and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason said Friday the case was under review to decide whether to seek the death penalty.

"It is an awful story," said Alberta Holt, the young Marine's aunt and his legal guardian when he was a teenager determined to flee a troubled Cleveland school for safer surroundings in the suburbs.

Crutchfield was attacked on January 5 while he and his girlfriend were waiting for a bus. He had heeded the warnings of commanders that a Marine on leave might be seen as a prime robbery target with a pocketful of money, so he only carried $8, his military ID card and a bank card.

"They took it, turned his pockets inside out, took what he had and told him since he was a Marine and didn't have any money he didn't deserve to live. They put the gun to his neck and shot him," Holt told The Associated Press.

The two men charged in the attack were identified as Ean Farrow, 19, and Thomas Ray III, 20, both of Cleveland. Their attorneys did not respond to The Associated Press' requests for comment.

Crutchfield knew he was returning to Iraq for another tour of duty, but had hesitated to tell his family until he was nearing the end of his 30-day leave.

He apparently had a troubled family. Holt wouldn't discuss it except to say "his mom and dad didn't raise him, just his grandmother and me." He didn't smoke or drink, she said.

He had attended Cleveland's inner-city East High School, but asked that he be allowed to live with his aunt and grandmother and attend suburban Bedford High School for his final two years.

"He saw his school was in turmoil and asked to get out," Holt said.

Bedford High teachers recalled Crutchfield's smile, his pride in his appearance, his determination to join the Marine Corps after graduation in 2005 and his aspiration to become an architect.

"He was friendly and kind and willing to help out in any way that he could," counselor Yvonne Sims said in an e-mail.

Connie LaNasa, who works in the school office, said Crutchfield was a well-behaved student and went about his school work with little notice.

"He lived out what he wanted to do and that is to be a Marine," LaNasa said.

Faculty members remembered Crutchfield as a top student in the computer design program, an office assistant and participant in the prom fashion show.

After his long hospitalization, an infection broke out a week before he died. "He said it felt like he was getting hit by lightning," Holt said.

When Crutchfield's body was laid out Tuesday in the Sacrificial Missionary Baptist Church, his white military dress hat was tugged down close to his eyes to conceal the skull flap that had been kept open to relieve swelling in his brain.

Marines provided an honor guard at his funeral service and carried the casket to his grave at the Western Reserve National Cemetery near Akron.

He was buried there on the same day as a Vietnam veteran, two veterans from World War II and three from Korea.

I guess with so many to cover, the media can't be everywhere. and everyone says it's the media that generalizes this. I used to think that until I realized these things DON'T happen where members of the media live. huh-lowwww!

no word on the outcome of the other shooting or stabbing. and funny residents complaining about gunfire from the kids in their own neighborhood wants more recreation areas. for what?! more shootings???

NEW YORK - A man was shot and killed early Wednesday morning during an attempted robbery in the Bronx, police said.

The incident happened at 355 East 143rd Street in the Mott Haven neighborhood, near a local fire house.

Firefighters said they heard shots ring out. Police rushed to the scene and found the 34-year-old victim, Melvin Wynn, with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

8 Arrested In Colombo Crime Family Takedown

WNBC-TV
updated 18 minutes ago

NEW YORK - WNBC.com has learned the hierarchy of the Colombo organized crime family, including the acting Boss and Under Boss, are named in a federal indictment obtained by the U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn. FBI agents and investigators from several federal and state law enforcement agencies arrested Thomas "Tommy Shots" Gioeli, identified as Colombo crime family Street Boss, and several others in early morning raids Wednesday, law enforcement sources said. Also named in the indictment is John "Sonny" Franzese, identified by authorities as Colombo crime family Under Boss, law enforcement officials say. Franzese is currently serving a prison sentence. Among other charges, the indictment contains several homicide counts stemming from the struggle for power within the Colombo organization during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Investigators say Carmine "Junior" Persico remains the Boss of the Colombo crime family even while serving a lengthy federal prison sentence on racketeering charges. Details of the arrests and charges will be made public at a press conference later Wednesday.

CRIME
Slayings of Latinos Increasing in Prince George's

By Aaron C. Davis
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, June 8, 2008; Page C06

In Prince George's County, where young black males have overwhelmingly dominated homicide statistics for decades, young Latino males in recent months were nearly as likely to be killed.

From mid-March to mid-May, Latinos were victims in 10 of 24 homicides. For the year, Latinos now account for 21 percent of all homicides investigated by county police, up from an average of less than 13 percent over the past five years.

Nearly all the slayings occurred in or around Langley Park. Although officers there have made determined efforts in recent years, language barriers and an immigrant population sometimes reluctant to cooperate with police mean the slayings are among the hardest to solve.

"There has definitely been an increase in the number of Latino homicides in the last 60 days or so," Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey said. "It's definitely a problem."

Police officers, community leaders and doctors serving the county's Latino population said anecdotal evidence, including increased numbers of Virginia license plates, suggests the immigrant population is surging in Langley Park amid the crackdown in parts of neighboring Virginia.

County police spokeswoman Sharon Taylor cautioned against drawing broad conclusions about the increase. "These things go in cycles; you could just as easily have a string of 10 or 12 black murders," she said.

The county has led the Washington region in Latino homicides in recent years, and as a percentage of Prince George's population, Latinos appear to be dying at an increasingly disproportionate rate. Although they account for more than one of every five homicides this year, Latinos make up less than 12 percent of the county's population, according to 2006 census estimates, the latest available.

Of the 10 homicides that occurred between mid-March and mid-May, investigators have classified two as gang-related. Another was an officer-involved shooting that remains under investigation. Three appear to have begun as arguments, and four occurred during apparent robberies. Police say immigrants are increasingly targeted for robberies, particularly on Friday nights, because they're known to carry around their weekly earnings in cash.

Of the four homicides in which police have made arrests, including both alleged gang killings, one of which took the life of a 15-year-old, charges point to Latino-on-Latino crime in every case. The remaining cases are unsolved, but many contain hallmarks that suggest killers knew their victims, police said.

John Realpe Montoya was killed execution style April 25, knelt down and shot in the back of the head. The body of Juan Carlos Guzman was found mutilated in a park May 12 -- shot and stabbed so many times that police close to the investigation say it appeared the killer was trying to make a point.

Some appear to have begun with senseless arguments, however, and community leaders say those killings are tied to a lethal combination of overcrowding and alcohol, most evident in a cluster of low-rent apartment complexes two miles northeast of the District line.

Charged with first-degree murder, Cesar Euelder Carbajal-Aldana is accused of killing Isaias Lopez-Vail on May 4 with a bat and a broken beer bottle after a night of drinking. Law enforcement sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said they found Carbajal-Aldana a few doors away, bloodied and inebriated; he never left the building.

"These past few weeks have been sad, bizarre -- some of the worst I've seen," said Bill Hanna, a professor of urban studies and planning at the University of Maryland at College Park who runs the advocacy group Action Langley Park.

Langley Park has for decades been an entry point for some of the Washington area's poorest immigrants. The county's Latino population -- led by Salvadorans, according to local estimates -- nearly doubled from 57,000 in 2000 to more than 98,000 in 2006, according to the census. Sheets often divide one-bedroom apartments into homes for two or three families, say local health-care workers. Some apartments are cordoned off for a dozen or more single men.

Lately, the Latino population has spilled beyond the neighborhood's unincorporated one-square-mile area into neighboring Lewisdale and Adelphi, and across the Montgomery County border into Silver Spring. But police say much of the trouble is at Riggs Road and University Boulevard in the heart of Langley Park, an area that at first glance could be mistaken for East Los Angeles.

Old men gamble on corners by kicking dice with their feet instead of rolling them by hand -- standing makes it easier to walk away and disown the game if police cruise by. Laborers scarf down pupusa, while women sell sliced mango and salt from shopping carts. On paydays, Cuzco, Coco Cabana and a half-dozen other warehouse-size clubs overflow following a clockworklike surge of Corona sales at Tick Tock Liquor and Restaurant.

Maj. Kevin Davis, commander of the 1st Police District, which encompasses Langley Park, has won over community groups by pressing the store's owner to stop selling singles -- and glass bottles. Four of the slayings this year, and dozens of stabbings in the past several, have occurred within a half-mile of its parking lot; broken beer bottles also have been a weapon used in more than half the assaults in his district's crime statistics, he said.

When Davis took over the area two years ago following a rash of machete attacks, he shrunk the Langley Park patrol beat to the smallest in the county, dedicating two cruisers to a handful of its worst blocks. Davis also has said he has nearly tripled the number of Spanish-speaking officers in the district.

On a good day, however, that means he still operates on a thin margin -- just one Spanish-speaking patrol officer available for each squad, on each shift.

On April 26, officers had to rely on a civilian passerby to translate for a female acquaintance of a stabbing victim. As police took notes, paramedics nearby attended to the alleged assailant, who had been subsequently attacked by a mob. Hobbled by the language barrier, police officers were able to do little about the secondary attack. A Spanish-speaking detective eventually arrived, but only after the initial report was taken through the civilian.

A week later in the same area, another stabbing victim, Erlli Amillcar Fuentes, died before he could be interviewed in Spanish and possibly identify his attacker, Cpl. Arvel Lewis, a former police spokesman, said at the time.

"There was a language barrier. They couldn't get someone to speak Spanish to him," Lewis said.

Officers who responded to the scene disputed that account and said Fuentes was unconscious by the time police arrived. The officers spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is still open.

Davis said that the department has made strides in hiring Spanish-speaking officers but that it takes time before inexperienced recruits are ready to be put on some of the county's roughest streets. "We've done a lot, but this is an issue where we're still in the catcher's position," he said.

The department said that 112 of its 1,570 officers, or 7 percent, speak Spanish and that it is recruiting more.

But unlike many other jurisdictions with burgeoning Spanish-speaking populations, basic language courses are not part of officers' routine, in-service training in the county. Taylor, the spokeswoman, said one of the department's Spanish-speaking officers recently completed an instructor's course and would soon begin teaching colleagues.

She said the department also is taking other steps, including nearly doubling the size of its gang unit. By acting quickly, officers with that unit might have prevented possible retaliatory violence after the slaying in April of 15-year-old Guillermo Enrique Medina, said Maj. Robert Liberati, who oversees the gang unit.

"We got in there right away; we sat down with the opposing leaders and said we know where you're at, we know who you are and if you do anything back, we're going to be right on you," he said.
