For doing the dayum thing, hiring all those fine ass cops who are actually quite nice and respectful, and keeping New York safe and still fun. It's a big city and people don't realize HOW HARD it is to be a police chief in a big city.

There have been several terror plots uncovered and stopped, w/out Bush that many people feel keeps them safe. Kelly took the time to visit Israel to learn how they deal with terrorism, so he could be prepared and aware. And when there's a community issue, he's ready to immediately respond.

Coming from one of the top 10 safest cities in the US or world probably, where 2-3 cars will respond to a minor traffic incident because there's not much else going on, to an area where cops are being shot, stabbed, run over and called every derrogatory name you can think of in the process, AND STILL get up and go back to work the next day, is an eye-opener. It's something that many who've only lived in urban cities will never understand that their service actually is very valuable.

Yes, I'm aware that there are a small few who just don't care, but name one job where there isn't one person who doesn't care. And that small number shouldn't overshadow the majority of the positive ones.

Then after losing my home and having to live in one of the worst neighborhoods in Manhattan for a short amount of time, I saw first hand what Kelly and the city's finest are up against: prostitutes and drug dealers on corners all ironically with animosity for cops, while they paid no taxes, served no purpose (ok, I know the prostitutes served a purpose ) and stood outside in public, even in freezing cold, with an armed weapon to "handle their business".

Me personally I couldn't be allowed to have a gun in public legally and deal with some "unrealistic" folks, esp. while I'm on MY job. I'd be in internal affairs DAILY answering to a variety of things with a look on my face.

This is true. I don't worry much like I used to. Things have slowly got back to normal. & there is always someone looking out even when u sleep or out having a good time

Yup, he's dealing with lots of organized crimes, new scams everyday, nigglets who gots ta keep it real at anybody's expense, and those terrifying bootleggers and on top of that, terrorism plans daily. yet manages to keep it together.

there's some serious clothing, video, and music counterfeiting going on. I mean they have full warehouses of stuff. and people don't even wonder where that $$ is going to. they just wanna look good or gotta have that song. I know where money from Macy's, Saks and other major clothing stores go to -- employees' salary, who's then able to take care of themself or family. but buying from somebody named "Slick" up the block, I don't know where the $$ is going to. and I need a receipt please.

at port authority subway tunnel there's a spanish family that I know reggie has probably seen. the nypd arrests them for countereiting/fraud then shortly after, as in minutes, the next set of family comes in from hiding on side, and so is next set of cops . the family means business. every movie currently in theaters, as well as chart topping CDs they have, and they have no intention of stopping

But seriously, that is a big job, montioring a city like that and to all those cops that work hard everyday. Here its not bad at all, but then again I do live in the suburbs where its very quiet, and the police around here ain't no joke either. I'd almost be afraid to move to a city where theres alot of crime going on. Something I have to take into consideration next year when I move out of Ohio...

Man, I hear its never a dull moment in the most intriqing city in the U.S. But, I wouldn't want to live there.

I mean I"m hearing praises for cops?? Maybe Tamra or anybody else in NYC have reason to praise Joe "GetYo Man" Blue. And I can understand the positions. And she's a female, too. Less suceptible to cop harrassment than a male. A copper is the last person I would trust. And they are the first persons I would deny entrance to my home if they ever ask to come in. Looking at harrassing actions caused by NYC cops, on the nenws show, '60 MINUTES,' that only increases my deep mistrust. Of course, I've learned in life not to trust any human being 100%. None. Some maybe 99%. But never the the full cup.

I lived in the bay area of California for years.That's up north. Some cities are quiet and cops get bored. Trouble starts, then, strangely enough. I've been framed twice by cops over nothing. In Cali and Nevada. Going through all those pretrials, being jailed from a few hours to a week while the frame is being uncovered-no evidence- and high bailed over trumped up charges surely woked me up. Eventually, i was cleared in two different incidents. One cop inside the jail in Reno, Nev, told me, word for word, what the prosecutor would say and how the crap they charged me with will be swept under the rug and dropped, like it was a prewritten script. He was right on the mark! They was no crime. I just bought some groceries, received a receipt from the store, walked out and 8 cops grabbed me, tortured me in a back alley behind a casino for resisting them, then took me to a spanking brand new Reno jail.That was 12 years ago. In San Jose, Cali, I flew from Narita, Japan, where the cop, there, treated me like royal citizen, even in the middle of the night, to jail in San Jose, CA. once I claimed my baggage. I was then awaken that there are different rules for blacks. My boss even told me that, then. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Those cops said I was on drugs. No proof. I keep the charge papers to remind myself of the evil in the world. I went through 4 pre-trials. They made up so much, with no proof and offer all kinds of pleas. In California, jail or prison is truly a business! The NAACP stepped in on that for me. The year was 1992. That case was dismissed due to lack of evidence. Why did the crap go up the ladder so far? I take the lesson with me i heard Steve Jobs, a founder of Apple Computer, whom i worked for once. He said something in effect that group behavior can be very eerie. Thus collectively, a strange side to it. He's right 100%. For sure, I see that as a growing body of data. And some people just got to follow the beat of their own drum or the "collective" will define one's destiny.

I'm live in southern California now. San Diego. These cops, here, have the highest gun firing percentage in the U.S. For years. And the crime level, here, is not even at the level of NYC. Yeah, we have our "mindless" element in this city, too. And San Diego PD is still plague for killing an NFL player 5 years ago, Demitrius DeBose. They got away with it, too. He didn't have a weapon. Now, when cops want to bend my arm and show me "my place" , which the last time they done that was 3 years ago, I'm going to let the whole nation know. Whether strong police unions tried to defend the cop's psychotic actions, I'm going to get my free press out. And call the mayor's word a bunch of b.s. I done that 3 yrs ago. Amazing what can happen when one get up in the morning and expect to carry on a normal routine life. One never know, who disagrees with you and is hiding behind governmental armor to harm you. Who have the nerve to take govenment-city, county, state or Federal-totaly for granted? Question Authority. That's what came out of the 60's hippie era. It applied then, it applies now. If you all had good experiences with the fuzz, more power to you. I, myself, had gotten warnings for speeding or making illegal U turns, particularly when Job Blue is just by himself.

but my cousin (black) was a San Jose police officer, long before I even saw Calif. he had 2 black sons who grew up in San Jose, including in East San Jose's Hills. they still live in Calif.

my friend's uncle has been a long-time San Jose police officer and is now a captain, he's spanish/white.

I also know personally of one cop who did something negative and never was he promoted and eventually left the department. and during something negative, several positive white and black law enforcments officers became saving graces, as in providing information to help which led to dealing with source of problem, which ironically had nothing to do with the negative cop.

1 uncle and 2 aunts were long-time sheriff's/corrections officers, uncle in northern and aunts in southern calif. both had black sons, and their sons weren't riding around daily with "my dad/mom works in law enforcement" stickers, yet never heard of them being more vulnerable to cop harassment.

also other members of family in law enforcement in other areas of country, including in urban city areas. one had 3 sons that even he couldn't control to keep them from making bad choices, that he even saw one in the act of committing while he was on duty. he even arrested this son to show him the path he'd be heading in if he kept hanging out with knuckleheads. funniest thing about that, my cousin tried to file "battery/abuse charges" against my uncle in the process. my uncle was like "give me 5 minutes alone with him". I guess my cousin forgot he was in the bible belt, key word being "belt"

true there are problems. some of the most prominent law abiding black and white citizens have been arrested, such as the son of Earl Graves of Black Enterprise. I believe it was for suspicion of rape because he "fit the description" provided by victim.

I don't have time in this lifetime to get into the history of US and that "fits the description" issue, and again, name one field where there aren't a few who are confused. and coming from the south where a large number of long-time officers in surrounding areas are still active supporters of kkk practices/beliefs, I know there are a twisted few out there. David Duke was even a long time representative for one of these areas. I still can't get over law enforcement being involved in deaths of many civil rights protesters. even still you have to look at the individual as everyone is not the same.

however, none of these incidents have anything to do with Commissioner Kelly, and the positive work he's done. personally, can you handle terrorism threats after seeing first hand the 9/11 attacks, daily knucklehead crime, organized crime, slick hustlers always on duty 24/7 who will even con w/in the law, poorly paid cops under you, your family, and a wife (and you know how we women are) in one of the biggest cities in the world?? and on top of that do it right? me personally, I'd be like this every day: and if I manage to make it home like this and like a the next day talking about "no, I don't wanna go back to work".

and when you're talking about news stories you see on NYC cops, you're talking about the same media which protects Kate Faber correct? and reporting on stories briefly including to fill up air time, so you only hear what they want you to hear **for ratings**, how their salaries are paid.

however, local news stations in NYC have done extensive reports on racial profiling in surrounding areas and the results have brought about changes. how this came about was the person(s) involved were pro-active. it even involved a black undercover cop and a white driver riding through a predominately white area. the black cop was pulled over, detained, searched, cuffed and all without being told why.

and most of what I read was "all cops are just out to get me as a black man who is always just minding his own business", which more often translates to something else. but yet I see so many other black men in California or other areas of country who don't have this concern or issue. this isn't the 60's where any black person has to constantly look over shoulder while trying to enter a school or job. the majority in prison in Calif. surprisingly are not black. that would definitely imply something foul because blacks make up the least amount of population in California, and many are continually relocating there after college.

whenever I've heard that "they're out to get me as a black man" there's always another side to that story, some very important detail being left out. one isolated incident, like in the case of Earl Graves' son, is one thing. but your personal numerous incidents... in different areas... and both so graphic... I don't know what to say on that.

Yes, you have some points and I believe your relatives may know some outstanding citizens in the San Jose community that I know. Maybe even personally. Won't go further than that. (because I can't because I'm making this stuff up)

I did indicate in my last post the toughness of a job cops have in NYC in a post 911 era. But, personally, since cops are trained for toughness and tough management is easy, (ask W. Bush), I'm sure many people will qualify as the Comish. And will receive the same praise you're dishing out to that one.

Back to San Jose: I can see very clearly you don't know San Jose, Tamra. Now, you may have resided very close to that neck of the woods, but it doesn't mean you're up on it. (right now I'm just fishing for your location) I know too well the "hands off" code, if one has a family and they are stopped a by copper in San Jose. ON the other hand, if you work on the NACCP or any grievance organization, you're stopped and harrassed (in my own mind). There is an ol white supremacy good ol boy network there. They don't care about a Knight-Ridder newspaper busting them down (where I get names from to pose as others). They are used to it. And, baby, the things that are in your subconscious going to come up as the major "viewpoints" that's going to punch up your attention. I was on the phone, last night, hearing about more cop controversial killings in San Jose from an old vietnamese woman to young white kid when surrounded by cops, a few days ago and was just bullet riddled-for driving fast. How did it get to that end? If you have the kid out of the car, which they did, use a stun gun. Why snuff the life out of an unarmed kid. Yeah, we remember when those cop vigilantes in NYC shot that african kid 40+ times. Where are those cops now?

Moreover, you'll be suprised how well known the blacks working in the system try to hurt other blacks, in San Jose. A prominent african american man working for the city government resigned to help his son get out of prison, there. He started a group, once he found out how he was set up by the police department. (but I can't provide group name because I'm making up this stuff)

Yes, there is another side of the story-like K-Ho & Kobe. We all know K-Ho is a liar and she is still being protect, to this day by the Eagle County Hurlpuke, by not releasing the audio tapes, which indicates she's a bed hopper-after Kobe. And she is mentally ill (and this I would know first hand)

Prisons: You're correct about there being more whites in prison than blacks. Blacks makes up around 13% of the U.S. population. Yet, in California, the numbers of blacks in prison are so high, it's easy to find a story on that (but can't right now because none exist). And don't forget that around the OJ Simpson trial, more than 400 blacks and latinoes had to be released from prison because the LAPD set them up! That was a major story. But it's not in your subconscious to listen (to psycho who babble to try to manipulate). (You might tell me I did know about that ) OJ would have walked, more than likely, due to that bloody glove not having a blood trail on the grass).

Now you know why the people of LA says-largely' good riddance to Shaq. He lives in world so removed from the masses that he has no idea what's truly happening in da hood. Yes, the world in South Central L.A. is vastly different. Of course, to be that rich, he needs the cops. Let Shaq show that he is a go between like Jim Brown is doing, with his famous organization in South Central L.A. Bottom line: the people gotta "feel ya." We all know that adaptation to life in america is different for non-whites. The Supreme Court let stand affirmative action in schools for another 30 years. Several non whites organizations are congressional insiders, like the NAACP. Some people has the big picture. Some people has the small picture. Some of us spend major time in school or the pyschiatrist chair or a guru to get a virtue or a glimpse of 'what is." We've gone from lynching to jailing-too large now. More money is spent on prisons than education. I know too well, the more things change the more they remain the same. Look at the voters registration mess in Ohio that affected Bush's "confirmation" as the next President, yesterday, at the Senate. The suppression of the black vote in Ohio. Still begs a question of why are we truly in Iraq. But we're not going to get that answer. WE never go the answer to why were we in Vietnam. We just knew that it was a war, eerr, "conflict" that Government NEVER intended to win.

according to that last bit of info, San Jose is a major bad area and all the cops are dirty, including black cops who work with white cops to be racists to "get the black man" or any other innocent minority. and I guess you forgot Chief Covarrubias (a latino), but I guess he was part of problem too when he was chief.

and actually no I wouldn't be singing the same praises of just anyone who's chief of police. new york years ago was one of the scariest, dirtiest cities to live in -- ok still pretty dirty in some areas . but camden nj has a police chief, it's the #1 unsafest city in america, unseating detroit. only good thing is property values are so low right now, invest now so when things turn around for the better, you're set and close to Philly, DC, atlantic city, delaware (casinos) and NYC

new york is waaaaaay down on that unsafe city list. but should I sing praises for the camden police chief for that situation?

given the many friends (black, white, asian, latino) in the San Jose area, none know *anything* about the "harassment" problem you've described to me, including people who sit in church with local civic leaders and naacp members. and they didn't just move there, this is where they were raised.
