under Dutch rule, indentured servants were paid, allowed to marry and even own businesses, with records allowed for all including birth records. blacks could even sue (and win) civilly in court for property damage.

the British attacked and defeated the Dutch in the late 1600s/early 1700s and thus began the "slave for life" rule, even for soon to be free indentured servants, w/absolutely no rights whatsoever. the cargo like cattle slave trade from thefts led to much profitable wealth and well-being of both British, French, Spanish (Spain) and american slave owners, wealth which still exist today as either a major government, banking, educational (prestigious ivy league) or insurance organization.

only hope for blacks under British rule was for other blacks to buy them and hope their plantation wasn't burned down in the process of freeing other slaves.

after the civil war, which ironically wasn't about slavery, but division of wealth, white slave owners became outlaws and/or joined the klan, or just continued to participate in the humiliating treatment of blacks/civil rights protesters only until the treatment became a global embarassment (Emmett Till, Medgar Evers, Vernon Dahmer, James Chaney, Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman. 16th St. Baptist church bombing, and MLK Jr. assassination)

certain rights were still not restored to blacks until the early 1980's

just keeping the info out there, because the more is known, the less history has a chance of repeating itself, and the less ignorant many will be of how this nation was changed by the greed of others who still show no remorse, or "apologized" and acknowledged their role w/out losing a cent.
