Some of the types of calls I get...

Post by KingFo1 »

Well, by now I've gotten just about fully adjusted to the new job....but I thought I'd share some of the more...'interesting' types of calls I get (tamra can probably relate to a couple of these):

I get a call where the person says: "Ummm....I don't know if this exists or not or where to start looking, but I need this report for my boss...can you help me?" (Ummmm...no. Ask your boss what the hell he/she wants you to do and quit wasting my time darnit)

Another one close to that: "Something is wrong with my connection" (WHAT connection?! Can't people learn to be more specific?! There was nothing in the job description about being a psychic)

And then of course, are those calls that just magically fix themselves as soon as I answer them...those I don't mind. ;-)

Overall, all things I can laugh about...I've had only a couple of really ticked off people call, and even they weren't bad...oh, and finals are almost over too! Four down, one more to go...

oh gawd, let's not dredge up those nightmares. but here I go :soap:

but stupidity paid the bills. these people are also the reason why tech support has been outsourced overseas and real support stays in the U.S. companies figure you're not going to spend all my money because you can't read. and they log those calls and add up how many could have been resolved by reading the friggin' manual, in many cases PAGE 1 or the quick help guide that could even be plastered on front of computer! over 75% in most cases. that costs companies money to sit and be someone's seeing eye dog!

the calls that kill me are the ones where I know someone is boldly lying and all the evidence just falls in to confirm as the story goes on.

I had someone claim their puter was hacked. turned out they deleted their files as there was a record of it. and then other factors come in such as my boyfriend and I got into a fight and then my files were gone.

there are two worlds: those who don't know that puters are not ghosts playing games but do specific tasks based upon THEIR own actions or lack of (maintenance), and people who try to avoid these people like the plague :squee:

the other 3 out of 4 calls that I learned to master in support: "It's not working". response: "Yes it is". sometimes I wish I could just hang up right after that, but I know it's coming: "But I haven't told you what's not working" NO SHIT!

but I blame Microsoft because it's pathetic when people don't know simple terms like "button", url/web address link or window name and sit on computer all day. there's no required basic info given to users. but this is shit they see everyday and can't find. and these are the people spammers and terrorists will leech onto to wreak havoc because they just happy click anything and accept anything submitted to them. :wall: and damn they love them some porn huh?

I set up new email alias addresses for specific people recently. I now know who's porn browsing and buying illegal stuff online because of the mail I get on a specific address that could only have been phished from a happy clicker's computer.

or they fail to even look at the menus - they think the menus are for support to use when THEY have a RTFM problem like "how do I print?" :wtf2:

when a person buys an Apple they're given "get started info" so they learn things like "menu", "window" and "button"

correction: with apple w/a new puter, you have to go through a series of questions and answers before the main window is displayed, as in you can't bypass it. so the user gets familiar with basic things immediately.

w/Microsoft, it powers up and bring the user right to the desktop w/the option to read, which surprisingly many manage to click away.

OMG, I know what you mean.
The first one of the day is worth an office chuckle, but after the tenth one, which happened to have called in PRIOR to noon, it is no longer a laughing matter.

Everyonce and a while I have to take a order from a customer. They'll say, I'd like a box of ___ (whatever it is). i say, ok, that's 500 pieces in a box. Which sometimes they will follow with: how many pieces in 2 boxes?

WTF?

Sometimes I just have to take the phone away from my ear for a moment :phone: and take a deep breath before insulting their intelligence!!

:buah:

oh man, classic. it's amazing they were able to dial the phone on their own, but we don't know that for sure.

but why didn't you say 300 in a box of 2 and suggest they buy 3 to get more. I wonder how many would notice, esp. if you put it in writing!

Well...I have the 'luxury' of not having to deal with most of these blunders (Cause since everything is internal and being monitored any potentially dangerous sites are blocked) but...I still have to deal with those that royally messed up. Example: I got a call the other day and the lady tells me they messed up the terminal and now they can't process on it...and its their ONLY terminal for that section. Then they get mad at me when I tell them they need to wait for next level support to fix the terminal...well gee, maybe if you actually BOTHERED to pay attention do what you were doing you wouldn't be in this mess...

And I see what you mean about people not knowing ANYTHING but what they do every day....I had one person call in who said that she can't post something in some random application I've never heard of...so I remoted in and watched her. It turns out nothing was wrong...someone just removed the file she was going to delete ANYWAY...complete and utter waste of time...but since she was so used to going through that a very specific way she got all confused.

As a matter of fact, a large majority of calls are "How-To's"...because people are always 'busy' and would rather bother us than to read a freakin manual. Honestly, how many people do I have to show how to do a freakin Mail Merge or some other function in Office? ...don't answer that.

I come in to work on Saturdays so customers can pick up their print orders. The calls I get aren't nearly so technical, but just as annoying. I'll get calls from people that want know if Bill's order is ready, but they don't know Bill's last name or the name of his company. More often than that, people will call and mumble with a foreign accent and I'll have to pretend we're having trouble with our phones and get them to spell the information for me.

I know it almost feels like you're always answering the same question over and over. it's like you wish you can gather all those people into an auditorium and say "ok what is your friggin' problem?!" and just start drop kicking one by one until they see the light.

you can write it down, make it as easy as possible, won't matter, just some folks won't read, think about it first or just wouldn't care.

We have a large breasted attractive woman in our group who does not understand the concept of computers. Apparently she was not hired 4 her computer skills. I'm sure she has other qualifications. I just have yet to see them.

But she continually requests computer help or for someone else to do the computer work for her. I play just as dumb as her when she comes to me. Let the person who hired her help her out.

Her calls to the help desk are comical. "I pressed this button & this window came up, now I'm stuck."
