ok, maybe there is a point to not spanking an infant/newborn. but 2 - 4 year olds? I don't know gray area and depends upon the child and how it's done. I don't know about the spanking "breeding violence" issue. and what person would have a need to spank a newborn?? or morelike what kind of person? the child wasn't born a genius and is still learning right from wrong so needs guidance not a whip.
but I have this rule, if they are old enough to cuss you out, bring a gun to school or hit you, time to deal as needed. "time out" ain't gonna cut it.

Calif. Lawmaker to Introduce Bill That Would Ban the Spanking of Children Under 4 Years Old

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Jan 20, 2007 (AP) - California parents could face jail and a fine for spanking their young children under legislation a state lawmaker has promised to introduce next week.

Democratic Assemblywoman Sally Lieber said such a law is needed because spanking victimizes helpless children and breeds violence in society.

"I think it's pretty hard to argue you need to beat a child," Lieber said. "Is it OK to whip a 1-year-old or a 6-month-old or a newborn?"

Lieber said her proposal would make spanking, hitting and slapping a child under 4 years old a misdemeanor. Adults could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Aides to the assemblywoman said they are still working on a definition for spanking.

Some Republican lawmakers called the idea ridiculous. But Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he may be receptive to it even though he has concerns about how the ban would be enforced.

The governor said he and his wife, Maria Shriver, did not spank their four children and used alternative methods for discipline. For example, Schwarzenegger said they found it more effective to threaten to take away their children's play time if they didn't do school work.

"They hate that much more than getting spanked," he told reporters Friday in Los Angeles.

California law permits spanking by parents unless the degree of force is excessive or not appropriate for the child's age.

If I was brought up on charges for spanking my kid I would argue that if
discipline is illegal, any form of restricting children's rights should also be illegal. Children at any age should be allowed to buy alcohol. Parents should not be allowed to tell their children to do things like eat their dinner, do their homework, say "please" and "thank you." From the moment of birth, no adult should have any rights when it comes to children.
Children should rule the world!

Then I would file a lawsuit against my child for excessive noise, damage of
property & squatting on my property. Fucking freeloaders...

I wish a police officer would try and arrest me for spanking my kids. I know all my kids are going to make me look short when they get older so if I don't break them off now I will be in a world of trouble. I get my kids in public just as quick as I get them at home. I wish someone would say something. I would ask them if they wanted some police included.

I had to come back and find this forum because today at WALMART, I saw a little 4 year old girl straight tell her MOM that she couldn't hit her in public because she will go to jail. I was like I wish my boys would I would have straight got in their face and said but darling YOU have to go HOME with me. I mean I wanted to go snatch her little behind for her mom who was embarrassed as hell. I mean that little Al Qaieda member was straight running through the aisles, knocking stuff down, and just acting a dang fool. But seriously I was wondering who told her that. Probably some meddling family member that has no business in that family at all. I probably would have gotten my cell phone out dialed 911 for the little brat and told them to bring an Ambulance with them cause I WILL KILL THE LITTLE BRAT. Then I would go find who told her that junk and beat them with her dead body.

but like someone said, hold my jail cell, I'll be right back! and the other problem is dumbass folks who don't know abuse from discipline which keeps a child in line.

Girl I was seriously about to say to the Mom I hold her you beat her. Sad thing was little Al Qaida had probably said this to her before you could tell cause the Mom was like could you please calm down. Girl I remember a time when I did something down the street Ms. Neighbor Lady or Man would beat me up the street and pass the belt to my Momma or Grandma and they would have a grand old tag team match on my booty. Now I don't believe in beating a child every time they do something cause punishment and time out sometimes is worse than a belt. I dont know how many times my mom saying you can't go to the game Friday or something made me want to cry worse than if she actually slapped me. Better yet the time she just said you disappoint me and didnt punish me or hit me but i felt so bad I was the best kid in the country for a little while.
