Police: Girl was victim of gruesome plan
10-year-old's abused body found in neighbor's storage tub

Sunday, April 16, 2006; Posted: 12:50 p.m. EDT (16:50 GMT)

PURCELL, Oklahoma (CNN) -- A 10-year-old Purcell, Oklahoma, girl was the victim of a horrific plan of kidnap, rape, torture and cannibalism, authorities said Saturday.

Investigators late Friday found Jamie Rose Bolin's body in a plastic storage tub in the bedroom closet of 26-year-old Kevin Underwood, said Tim Kuykendall, the district attorney for McClain County.

The medical examiner said the girl, who had been missing since Wednesday, died of asphyxiation and blunt blows to the head, Kuykendall told a news conference Saturday. The district attorney added that her injuries were also consistent with a "serious attempt to cut the head off the body."

Underwood -- who is in custody but has not been formally charged -- and the girl lived in the same apartment complex. He does not have a felony criminal history or known mental illness.

Evidence seized from Underwood's apartment included a decorative dagger authorities say was used to try to decapitate the girl, a hacksaw, a meat tenderizer, barbecue skewers and a wooden cutting board, Kuykendall said.

Also found were a dismantled bicycle under a bed, a mug thought to have been carried by the girl into the apartment, a video of a cable television documentary on serial killers and a computer, Kuykendall said.

Underwood purchased the hacksaw, skewers and meat tenderizer in the months before the girl died, Kuykendall said.

The girl was struck on the head with the cutting board "three to four times," Kuykendall said, and Underwood suffocated her using duct tape and covering her mouth with his hand.

Kuykendall said it was believed the girl screamed "numerous times." It was unclear how her cries apparently went unheard.

"She pled for her life," he said. "The first thing out of her mouth when he first hit her was, 'I'm sorry.' "

After the news conference, Kuykendall said authorities believe she did not die immediately.

An autopsy report is being finalized.

'This was well planned out'

Authorities believe the girl was molested after she had died, Kuykendall told CNN after the news conference.

Her clothes had been removed and placed with her inside the tub, along with a towel to soak up blood, Kuykendall said.

Authorities think she was killed before police were notified that she had disappeared.

"This was well planned out," said said Purcell Police Chief David Tompkins. He added that other individuals, including an woman and a 5-year-old boy, also were targeted and considered.

"But Rose was the one who was selected for this plan," he said.

Police suspect she was selected simply because she walked past Underwood's apartment on Wednesday.

The two were acquainted, authorities said. Underwood had a pet rat that would sit on his shoulder, Tompkins said, and the girl had previously seen and petted it.

The night before her death, she had intended to use a pay phone in the apartment building to order pizza, according to Kuykendall. Underwood had offered his phone, but the girl responded that she would get in trouble if she went into his apartment because she was not allowed to enter strangers' homes, Kuykendall said.

However, she apparently did use his phone to place the order, according to Kuykendall.

The next day, she is believed to have gone into Underwood's apartment voluntarily, Kuykendall said.

"Whether you term that 'lured in' or not, I believe she went into the apartment of her own free will," he said.

Underwood is being held without bail at McClain County jail and is scheduled to appear before a judge Monday to face a charge of first-degree murder. Other charges are also possible, said Kuykendall, who added that he would seek the death penalty.

Underwood did not have an attorney as of Saturday, according to Kuykendall.

'He was very quiet'

Balloons, flowers and a teddy bear have been left outside the apartment building.

"It's very hard to talk to a family about things like this," said Kuykendall, who informed the Bolin family of Underwood's alleged plan.

"I kind of look at it in terms of, would I want to know what happened to my daughter, my child?" he said.

Underwood had lived in the apartment for about a year and a half and, according to Tompkins, and had worked at a grocery store for a year and at a fast food restaurant before that.

FBI investigators first identified Underwood as a person of interest when they stopped him at a roadside checkpoint near the apartment complex, Kuykendall said.

After an interview, Underwood consented to a search of his apartment, during which investigators found the child's body, Kuykendall said. A search warrant was then obtained, he said.

"He was very quiet ... comes from a nice family" and had a close relationship with relatives, Kuykendall told CNN describing Underwood.

"Nothing in his background that we know of would have indicated that he could have done this. He was the guy next door."
and I'm sure if those who knew him look back, someone will recall something that was strange enough to set off the serial killer alarm. dead pets somewhere perhaps? maybe the pet rat was part of his practice?

Suspect blogged about cannibalism
'Dangerously weird' fantasies would get him locked up

Sunday, April 16, 2006; Posted: 5:05 p.m. EDT (21:05 GMT)

PURCELL, Oklahoma (AP) -- The man accused of killing a 10-year-old neighbor girl for an elaborate plan to eat human flesh joked about cannibalism on his online diary, discussed the effects of not taking his anti-depression medication and mentioned "dangerously weird" fantasies.

All he wanted in life, Kevin Ray Underwood wrote in his blog, was "to be able to live like a normal person."

People who knew Underwood described him Sunday as a quiet, "boring" and seemingly trustworthy young man. His mother, who lived across town, called him a "wonderful boy."

The 26-year-old grocery store stocker was arrested Friday. Investigators searched his apartment after he aroused their suspicions at a checkpoint, and found a large plastic tub in a bedroom closet.

According to a police affidavit, he confessed that he killed Jamie Rose Bolin, telling FBI agents: "Go ahead and arrest me. She is in there. I chopped her up."

Jamie's unclothed body was inside the tub, along with a towel used to soak up blood, officials said. Police said that, while there were deep saw marks on the girl's neck, she had not been dismembered.

Mother: 'He was always a wonderful boy' ain't that what Dahmer's mother said about him?

"Regarding a potential motive," Purcell Police Chief David Tompkins said Saturday, "this appears to have been part of a plan to kidnap a person, rape them, torture them, kill them, cut off their head, drain the body of blood, rape the corpse, eat the corpse then dispose of the organs and bones."

Investigators found meat tenderizer and barbecue skewers that he planned to use on the body, McClain County District Attorney Tim Kuykendall said in this small community 40 miles south of Oklahoma City.

Underwood, who is to be formally charged with first-degree murder Monday, lived alone in an apartment downstairs from the one where Jamie lived with her father.

Authorities believe Underwood killed the girl Wednesday, when she disappeared after going to a library, by beating and smothering her.

Underwood's family was shocked.

"This is something that I don't know where it came from," Underwood's mother, Connie, said through tears in a brief telephone interview Sunday with The Associated Press. "He was always a wonderful boy.

"I would like to be able to tell her family how sorry we are. I just feel so terrible."

'Kingdom of Loathing'

On his blog, an online diary that he had kept since September 2002, Underwood described himself as "single, bored, and lonely, but other than that, pretty happy."

He mentions cannibalism, asking "If you were a cannibal, what would you wear to dinner?" and responding: "The skin of last night's main course." :o (not even close to shit others think about daily. I usually think get up, shower, get dressed, scrape up some change, get coffee, donut and cuss the rest of the day out, while worrying about realistic meals later)

In an entry dated February 4, 2006, Underwood wrote that he struggled with depression and social interaction.

"Pretty much the only time I believe in God is when I blame him for something," he said. "Or, when I'm really depressed, to cry and beg him to make me better, to make whatever is wrong in my brain go away, so that I can live like a normal person.

"That's all I want in life, is to be able to live like a normal person." (define normal? does he mean Dick Cheney normal, Randy Cunningham or Tom Delay normal??

He wrote that he rarely left his apartment for long stretches, except to go to work and to buy food. "I just sit here at the computer every minute of the day, when I'm not at work. A week or so ago, I spent my day off sitting here at the computer, barely moving from the chair, for 14 hours."

He said one of his main interests was the online role-playing game "Kingdom of Loathing," in which stick figures battle one another.

In September 2004, he wrote that his depression deepened after several months without taking the medication Lexapro, an antidepressant also used in the treatment of anxiety disorders. :o (I find it hard to believe he wasn't monitored in some way, w/regular welfare checks on him.

"For example, my fantasies are just getting weirder and weirder. Dangerously weird," he wrote. "If people knew the kinds of things I think about anymore, I'd probably be locked away. No probably about it, I know I would be." DING, DING, DING, JACKPOTTTT!!!!

Boring man who rarely smiled

Underwood worked for nearly seven years at a Carl's Jr. restaurant, where shift leader Bill Verdan described him as a quiet person who kept to himself. "He did a good job," Verdan said Sunday.

However, he said Underwood, who quit about a year ago, was a "boring" man who rarely smiled.

"Just his tone of voice, he just sounded dull," Verdan said. "Trying to get a smile out of him took an act of Congress."

Verdan said he and his wife and young daughters never suspected anything unusual.

"He gave my wife rides home from work numerous times," Verdan said. "We never felt uncomfortable. I talked to my girls after this happened, and they said they felt comfortable around him."

His most recent job was as a stocker at a Griders Discount Foods grocery store in Oklahoma City, where he arrived early for his shift Friday, said a manager at the store, Jerry Castro.

"He was the same as always," Castro said. "He was quiet and kept to himself. He didn't interact with people. It just didn't dawn on you that this was something he'd do."

I'm all for just letting the parents of the victim have at these sick mofos!!!
:club: :violent: :axe: :box:

let them relieve some anger instead of sitting home crying from anguish while the person who killed their child is being fed, clothed, housed, entertained (including by raping others in prison or getting raped ) and more. this way we kill (pardon the pun) 2 birds w/one stone.

It would make for a great reality show too. The sicko verus the parents. They can have any weapon they want and all he can do is try to run. Or let them do to them what they did to their child or family memeber.
