When throwing a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day party, it's probably not a good idea for attendees (white) to wear gang apparel, Afro wigs, and dress as Aunt Jemima. Oh, and the menu should not entirely consist of fried chicken, BBQ and malt liquor served in brown paper bags. Somehow, students at one Texas university (white) did not grasp this simple concept. the thing is it doesn't help that almost 40 years after MLK's death, I can walk outside and find about 100 urban (black, white and spanish) who fit this stereotype, and in less than an hour.

the thing that makes it offensive is how they chose to honor MLK who lived w/dignity and grace, and wouldn't be caught dead dressing like a thug.

the fact that the school is laxed about discipline over this sends another message. let someone had worn a swastika or anything pro-Hitler, then all media hell would have broke loose. once again, it's okay to insult everyone except jews.

my Hitler hot-hoochie outfit is ready for Halloween AND the day after if I feel like it! so either we are tolerant of all points of view or the media needs to stop ignoring other stuff while jumping over folks for non-issues - like Prince Harry over a damn costume. all of a sudden he's a racist, needs sensitivity training, etc. while a lot of pro-slavery shit remains proudly!

Unfortunately, the problem with the Hitler issue is that he persecuted mainly WHITE people and my, that's a big NO NO because that shouldn't happen to white people. And the general thought still seems to be with color-based racial profiling and discrimination is that "oh well, they're black, they're used to it". And so it shall carry on.

I'm glad to say I have very non-judgmental parents in regard to all aspects of life: religion, race, class, career, etc. Basically, diversity in general - and i have the same method of thought. What frightens me is that the narrow mindedness of people tends to pass on from generation to generation ESPECIALLY of those living in Smaller Town, USA. In Small Town, USA, people freak out in the slightest imbalance of demographics; "Oh no, a black family bought a house on our block, our property value is going to go down" and "Oh Crap, an Arab bought the gas station across town, we're going to have to be on the lookout for Sleeper Cells".

This kills me because people jump to conclusions sooo quickly. How do they not know the Black dad is not the head of the local university and will spend a lot of money making his house the best on the block? How do they know the Arab who bought the gas station on the corner is actually from INDIA, not Osama's Regime?

How do we change this? Educate in the schools, start them off young? If we can't have prayer or the word god in Schools anymore for fear of offending non-Christian or Agnostic sects, how come we don't start ethics and diversity in first grade and continue that through junior high so as not to offend everyone else?

I grew up in a smaller town and now that i live in a bigger, more diverse city, I realize how racist and bigoted the town I came from really is. It seems that people raised in a larger Urban area would be more likely to be prone to tolerance of all sorts because from day one, you get used to all walks of life living and working along side eachother, most of the time harmoniouosly, not always, but acceptance becomes a way of life.

I don't even know if I am making sense, but case in point: narrow minded bigot PISS ME OFF. Oh, and ignorant people too.

again, starts in the home because in spite of how dysfunctional my family was and in spite of my mother being spit on, discriminated against openly in 60s, she never taught us to hate others.

as a result, I look at people differently: creep or non creep, predator or prey, asshole or non-asshole, eats too healthy or my chocolate junk food loving buddy!

but my friends are white, black, asian (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese - as such can tell difference, so that they all look aike is bullshit, and Hindu), German, Jewish, Italian, Iraqi and other areas of middle east, Dutch, French, Irish, etc.

I completely agree...it all starts with how you were raised. If parents keep teaching the same ignorant bull about racial stereotypes to their kids, then what can they do BUT see those same things in others?

But it needs to be reinforced in schools too. Because far too many times are kids influenced with things that they see outside the home and in each other.

Now while I'll admit that I don't have many friends and that most of them are either black or white...I don't judge people on their race/religion/whatever. Whats important is that you RESPECT each other as human beings. My mother raised me to think that way, so I don't hold any special bias towards anyone.

And then again, there are those of us that actually portray those stereotypes and emulate that behavior...which is even more shameful because all that does is fuel the ignorance of racially biased people in the first place.

Its a really sad and shameful cycle...

you are definitely right about school being a factor. only learned inaccurate white history. had to discover history of other nationalities and religions on my own. and don't even discuss contributions made by gays and lesbians. in my day they weren't even discussed on the street when passing, just don't ask and don't be rude. but given today's openness, I would think the contributions of all would be discussed openly throughout all parts of education. it just ain't gonna happen in surbubia where our future leaders will mostly emerge from.

I was raised by BOMBINGHAM surviors and they taught me to be understanding of all points of view. Now my mom will talk about you if you black white or in between she don't care and will tell you in your face if you don't like it change it. I was bused to a white area in the 6th grade and personally was afraid of the Klan they litterally had to put all the black students in two classrooms for us to be escorted to the bus by the police and this was in the '90s. One of my teachers called me NIGGER rather than Nika everyday and tried to say it was her accent when I complained to the principal she stopped after my Mom told her she was going to sue her for everthing that ever came across her table for the rest of her life if she kept it up. But still one of my best friends on the planet is white. But if our generation and the one coming up behind us don't do anything to change this perception of Blackness nothing will change. One of the hottest games was GRAND THEFT AUTO SAN ANDREAS and it shows Blacks and Mexicans as nothing but criminals. We can't ask people to change their minds if we don't show them that its not the way it really is. Sad to say in Black neighborhoods if you are a Honor Roll student you will get picked on by your peers rather than congratualated. Speak correctly and have good manners and you are acting White. My new boss is the biggest racist on the planet and doesn't even know it. He really tries but he really think every black person he meets is uneducated and poor. He actually thought I was a drop out because I have an 8 year old and offered to send me back to school. I was like dude I have my MBA wtf. Didn't curse but I really wanted tooo tell him about hisself. I am like read my resume Mr. Lawyerpants. I got my stuff early and with 3 kids to boot. But its hard to change minds when a mind doesn't want to be changed.

I would love to meet your boss. he sounds very uneducated his damn self. I would love to ask him some questions to let him know that I know he's ignorant. and do in such a way, he'll be speechless. there's a way to cuss people out w/out using a cuss word, and to let them know you know they are just shit trying to feel better by shitting on others.

Girl this man would make you wanna scream and pull your hair out. He swears he isn't racist. He will throw statistics out at you about how many black men do this or that. He is so smart dumb its ridiculous. Today we were in a meeting and he was acting like I have never seen a spreadsheet before and he was showing me the one I created for his dumb bootie. Girl everyone was looking at him like wtf is going on. She does most of the computer things for the entire company and you are in her face like she is the dinkiest person here. Girl I felt so bad for him.
