Discriminating against gays and lesbians is the last bastion of bigotry IMHO. Equal rights for everyone means homosexuals should be able to marry just like everyone else. Might I remind ya'll that blacks and whites weren't able to legally marry until 1968!!

There is tons of stuff in the bible people don't espouse to any longer... like cutting your hair, trimming your beard, wearing clothes of mixed fibers, animal sacrifices and on and on. This is NOT a religious issue it is an issue of civil rights so don't be beating up people with your bible!

actually did you read about the woman recently fired because of cohabitation law?

lots of laws still on the books, including in regards to same sex couples, but they are now disgressionary.

my only issue is being single, what they're asking for are the same things a single person doesn't have now. for example, I choose NOT TO MARRY, if I die after adopting a kid, unless I have a will, that child is going back to state. one of their biggest issues is parenting and legal rights after death. hello!!! do what single people do, get a will and a living will! geesh. this doesn't have to become a federal issue to take more responsibility for children and home affairs. lawyers and legal documents haven't disappeared to handle these issues.

and their rights now opens up insurance fraud, meaning friends will start helping their friends out insurance wise, because how would you know who's not a same sex couple/union or not. and I can easily see two best friends marrying to save one's life for medical insurance needs, and then divorcing right after or marrying heterosexual later.

I personally know a hetero couple who married for that exact reason. He needed some very expensive eye surgery to save his sight. After the surgery and all of the follow up they divorced. Married less then a year.

Sure some homosexual couples are going to abuse the right to marry but tons of hetero couples are doing it already. That shouldn't be the basis for prohibiting gays and lesbians from marrying.

As for a will and such... there are over 1,000 rights and priviliges married couples have that a "civil union" does not afford. I still say its not right that they should be banned from the civil right to marry! Equal rights for all... No?

actually the problem is tax laws. rewriting those would allow fairness for all.

I personally think given the average person starts contributing to taxes at 15 years of age until about 65, that during life and after death we should be able to decide how portions of our taxes are applied. they don't have these limited tax laws issues in a few other countries (like canada) because taxes are applied fairly to allow for all to be taken care of fairly.

but this goes back to our how government set up the tax system and for what.

yup because that would cover everyone and everyone's needs. but the hole has been dug and not sure if that would even be possible.

I just hate the fact that as a single person, should I die all contributions would automatically go back to the state. but ironically anything owed would expected to be covered by next of kin!

I'm am so confused at the things you are saying in this topic Tamra. What does taxes have to do with it?

Personally, I dont think I could *marry* another man. They do have insurance and things for (partners) at many companies these days. Maybe I'll come back and say more later. I'm kinda tired.

this is why same sex couples are peitioning for marriage all over the country -- for the supposed 1100++ additional tax rights afforded to heterosexual couples.

I still say will and estate documents, as well as planning and savings will do same, because single people have to do the same dayum thing. but gays across u.s. feel they're being denied tax rights that married couples get.
