'Policeman' Victor Willis facing drug, gun charges

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- The singer who dressed as a policeman in the flamboyant late 1970s disco band "Village People" has been arrested after disappearing while drug and gun charges against him were pending, officials said on Monday.

Victor Willis, who co-wrote some of the band's hits such as "In the Navy" and "YMCA" has had a number of run-ins with the law since he left the group in 1980 and now faces as much as five years in prison, said Morley Pitt, assistant district attorney in San Mateo County south of San Francisco.

"It's just sad that his life has spiraled down to the point where in all likelihood he's going to go to prison," Pitt, who said he enjoys the song "YMCA", told Reuters. "You never like to see anybody go to prison, let alone somebody who is 54 years old."

Willis was arrested last year on charges of possessing a gun and cocaine, but he disappeared after agreeing to a plea deal that set a maximum sentence of 16 months behind bars, Pitt said.

He was re-arrested on Sunday and the singer is due in court on Tuesday.

Because he went missing, the San Francisco-area resident now faces as much as four years, four months in prison on those charges, as well as an additional eight months on possible new narcotics charges, Pitt said.

Easily remembered for their outlandish costumes including a construction worker, a policeman, a cowboy and a leather-clad biker, the Village People were one of the best known bands of the disco era. Their song "YMCA" is also a favorite gay anthem.

Can any one say REHAB. He has a problem that jail isn't going to solve like most drug users. They know they can do something to help this guy they just won't cause sending him to jail is easier.

I know I wonder if he's beyond rehab help, as in it was offered previously and he blew it.

even still I have a problem w/locking up iconic folks, or really anyone over behavioral drug issues w/sex offenders, murders and violent offenders. unless they've killed or raped someone. if it's serious keep them in confined rehab quarters for the length of time they would served in prison until they get clean.

like I have a big issue w/the man hassling Art Garfunkle. oh come on, we're talking a 60's icon. let the man smoke a lil pot, geesh! ain't like he's a drug cartel leader or distributing to kids.

it's just

damn! not cocaine, meth, not crack, just friggin weed. most he'll want to do is sleep or eat a bunch of junk food, while listening to some good tunes.

but I had a childhood friend who had a very privileged life and became a crack addict. he's not even the same sweet kid we all knew and I'm terrified of him because his heart is evil. pure evil.

I find it ironic that a Doctor can prescribe cocaine to a patient but not weed. Anyway who has heard of someone getting high on a little pot and doing more than getting the munchies and wanting to take a serious nap

. Putting people in jail for smoking crack or doing meth really doesn't help the problem it just delays it.

doctors can prescribe marijuana. in many states now it is legal to prescribe it.

but still a federal offense to possess it. you figure it out.

Thats my point until the Feds get there heads out their butts and all 50 states allow it the patients will still have to worry about getting a quality stash. If they grow it for themselves and something happens and a cop has to come by they are going to jail for something they need to even eat. Had a friend with AIDS that the only way he could eat was if he smoked a little and his brother and wife got into a fight and they actually arrested him for having grown his own pot. Exactly who was he hurting?

in some states it's overlooked depending upon the amount in possession

yet you go to Amsterdam and other places in Europe, pot is openly smoked/possessed. yet they don't have the problems we supposedly have from possession/distribution of it.

so someone IS growing pot and making money from sale of it in Europe. but since it's freely used in places like Amsterdam, it isn't a drug cartel problem and it's devalued since it's easy to obtain. hint, hint, big ass hint!! less money spent on prosecution and enforcement, and more money spent on preventing crime/community involvement.

but cocaine, crack, meth, heroin, and other similar hard drugs, those are problem mofos. nothing can stop those wall crawlers when it comes to their addiction. they'll rob, cheat, rape, sell a child, anything for a hit
