Off-Duty Officer Shot, Wounded In Bronx Altercation

NEW YORK - Police say an off-duty officer was wounded as he walked his dog down a Bronx street after an altercation ended in gunfire.

The officer's injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

The officer told police he was approached by a suspect who threatened him just after 12:30 a.m. Friday in the Wakefield section of the Bronx.

Police say the suspect initially walked away, but returned a short time later with a 9mm handgun and fired numerous times.

The officer returned fire, but it's not clear if the suspect was wounded in the shooting. A bullet grazed the officer's head. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Police were searching for the suspect, who fled on foot.

Meantime, the handgun was recovered at the scene. It wasn't clear what prompted the man to approach the officer.

Intruder Attacks Woman, 70, In Brooklyn Home
Needs 27 Stitches

DYKER HEIGHTS, N.Y. --

Police said a burglar broke into a Brooklyn home and attacked an elderly woman inside.

The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Officials said the intruder entered through a kitchen window at the Dyker Heights apartment, which is one unit in a six-family building, on 70 Street and found the homeowner inside.

The burglar clubbed the woman, who is in her 70s and identified as Carmela Boccadifuoco, on the back of the head with a blunt instrument and fled the scene, police said.

Also at home was Boccadifuoco's mother, who is in her 90s and homebound. Boccadifuoco's mother was unharmed and fine, authorities said.

Boccadifuoco, whose son is a police officer, is in stable condition after being hospitalized, authorities said. She needed 27 stitches and now suffers headaches, officials said.

Police, who are still searching for the burglar, said it is unclear what if anything was taken from the home.

Neighbors say the residential area is a quiet place and call the crime "scary."

One man said area residents had called Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz to ask for more patrols but had gotten no response since the last robbery about two weeks ago. The victim of that robbery told News4's Monica Morales that he was lucky he and his family were not hurt.

Markowitz said he would visit Boccadifuoco at her home at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Police Search For Man Who Allegedly Molested Girl

NEW YORK -- New York City police are looking for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl in Queens.

The incident happened on Thursday near 54th Street and 39th Drive in the Woodside section.

Police released a sketch of the man, believed to be between 25 and 35 years old. He was described as five feet, 11 inches tall with a thin build and black hair.

The man was wearing a backpack with black and gray stripes and sneakers with green trim, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Fourth-Grader Fights For His Life

NEW YORK -- A Brooklyn fourth-grader was leaving an after-school program Tuesday night when he was run down by a hit-and-run driver.

Akeem Suluki, 9, was in critical condition late Tuesday night at Kings County Hospital in the Wingate section of Brooklyn after being thrown 40 feet, police said, earlier in the day on Malcolm X Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

“Whoever ran over my child, please come forward,” the boy’s mother, Khadijah Suluki, begged earlier in the day. “Why would you run into a child? Why did you drive like that?”

Community organizer Anthony Herbert led a prayer vigil Tuesday night for the PS 262 student as police looked for clues that might lead to the driver of the white Dodge Charger, the vehicle police said was involved in the accident. Their prayers were answered just after 10:30 p.m. when the suspect turned himself into the 81st precinct, police said.

Sources told WNBC.com the suspect is 16 years old, making it illegal for him to drive in the city.

One witness said the car ran a red light while driving northbound before hitting Akeem.

“The little boy was already in the street but he hit him and kept going,” the witness said.

Meanwhile, the family gathered outside of Kings County Hospital as the fourth-grader, now with a body cast, collapsed lungs and brain injuries, fought for his young life.

“He just got a brand new Wii game,” his mother said. “He was happy, he learned to play chess. He’s my youngest of six. He’s my baby.”

Yonkers Police Arrest 31 In Drug Sweep

NEW YORK - Police in Yonkers said they have arrested 31 suspects in a major drug sweep. The arrests followed a year-long investigation, police said. During that time, narcotics officers made 100 purchases of marijuana, crack cocaine, cocaine, prescription pills and heroin.

Police are sill searching for another 21 people wanted in connection with the sweep.

Charges range from Criminal Sale of Controlled Substance 3rd and 5th degree to Criminal sale of Marijuana.

Police Hunt For Early Morning Subway Purse Snatcher

NEW YORK -- The New York City Police Department is searching for a man wanted in connection with four grand larcenies that took place in the city’s subway system during the busy morning commute.

Police said the man, described as a 30- to 35-year-old man who is approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build, selects each victim among the crowds on subway platforms.

He then snatches a purse and makes a dangerous getaway where no one is likely to chase him – through subway tunnels.

The man, who police describe as fast and daring, has struck four times this week.

The man first struck at approximately 8:30 a.m. Sunday on the L subway at 14th Street and First Avenue, police said. The man approached a 24-year-old female who was sitting on a platform bench, grabbed her purse and then fled, police said.

Two days later, at about 9:20 a.m. on the 1 subway at Seventh Avenue South and Christopher Street, the suspect approached a 38-year-old woman, grabbed her purse and then fled.

The next morning, at about 9:05 a.m., the same man is believed to have approached a 30-year-old woman on the L subway at 14th Street and Third Avenue, grabbed her purse and then fled into the subway tunnel for a third time.

His most recent attack was just after 7:30 a.m. on the northbound 6 platform at Lafayette and Bleeker streets. He is said to have approached a 27-year-old woman’s purse before fleeing into the subway tunnel.

John Conyers should have flown in to SEE THIS instead of flying in to check on a case involving convicted drug dealers ramming a police car!

Straight-A Teen Killed In 'Gangland Turf War'

NEW YORK --

A 15-year-old girl died and five young men were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after two separate shootings in the same neighborhood in Queens.

The young girl, Brandon Bethea, 15, was shot in the head in front of a housing project on Redfern Avenue in what locals described as a "crossfire turf war."

Bethea, who was a straight-A student with a bright future, was rushed to the hospital where she died because of injuries, officials said.

A memorial shrine was erected at the scene where she was shot.

Police said Bethea lived in Jamaica, Queens.

There have been no arrests in her slaying.

The victim's boyfriend, Isiah Alston, also 15, told the Daily News that Brandon was not the intended target.

"She was coming to see me," he said. "Somebody was shooting. It wasn't meant for her. That's my girl."

He said Brandon, who was with a group of friends, lived in Jamaica and was a student at Intermediate School 53.

Family members told 1010 WINS radio that Brandon was planning to attend John Adams High School in Ozone Park in the fall.

A drive-by shooting that wounded five men happened half a mile away about three hours later.

Police said they have taken six people into custody in connection with the shooting, which happened at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday near a restaurant at Beach 21st Street and Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway.

Police found four victims, all black men, on the scene. The first victim, 22, suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen. He was in stable condition at Mary Immaculate Hospital along with another victim, 66, who suffered wounds to his legs.

A third man, 20, was in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital after being shot in the leg and arm. A fourth victim, 44, was in stable condition at St. John's Hospital after being shot in the arm. A fifth victim was transported to the hospital by private car.

A white 1995 Jeep Cherokee was stopped in the area shortly after the shooting and a .357-caliber revolver was recovered. Charges are pending against the six individuals taken into custody, police said.

Detectives continue to search for evidence about what happened in the street shooting, but they said they do not believe the shootings were related.

NYPD: Man Shot Dead In Harlem

NEW YORK -- A 21-year-old man was shot dead early Tuesday on Lenox Avenue in Harlem, police say.

The victim dies of a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Officers said they have little to go on at this point. Witnesses reported hearing five or six gunshots and then seeing two people running from the scene around 3 a.m. It is unclear if they were involved or if they were fleeing the gunfire.

Emergency workers pronounced the man dead at the scene.

There have been no arrests so far, and police are looking for those responsible.

Man Arrested In S.I. Liquor Store Killing

NEW YORK -- A man was arrested Thursday in the fatal shooting of a 67-year-old man inside a Staten Island liquor store, police said.

John Lanorith, 40, of Staten Island, has been charged with murder in the first degree.

Elgudzha Koyenishvili, the liquor store owner, was shot twice in the chest at around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. He was taken to Island University North Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Police said the gunman grabbed a cash register and ran from the store at 118 Lincoln Ave.

5 Shot In Broad Daylight On Queens Sidewalk
Police Say One Gunman Is Responsible

NEW YORK --

Police said five people were shot on a busy Queens street at about 11:40 a.m. Saturday.

Both sides of Roosevelt Avenue had been shut down between 80th and 81st streets as police investigated.

Officers told News 4 New York it appears this may have been a gang-related shooting.

Police said they responded to a 911 call for a woman shot at a bus stop 80th Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights.

Upon arrival, they said they found a total of five shooting victims -- three with gunshot wounds and two with graze wounds.

Police said one man fired all the shots and that he was on foot with a group of about five others. Police are hoping surveillance cameras in the area caught the crime.

All of the victims were transported to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said.

Initial reports had said the woman who was shot was pregnant, but the New York Police Department said later that she was not.

The woman, 21, was hurt the worst out of all the victims. Police said it appears a 21-year-old man was the only intended target, and that this man stumbled into a nearby restaurant and collapsed after he was shot.

No arrests have been made and police say the investigation is ongoing.

The manager of a neighborhood beauty salon said he ran out on the street after hearing the shots and saw the five victims lying on the bloodied pavement.

Hugo Calle, the manager, said four men and a woman were shot.

Last Sunday, there was a gang-related shooting in which one man was injured just steps away from this incident but it is unclear whether they are related.

Those who live in the area are concerned.

"It's kind of scary to live here when i know at any times during the day time even that i could be shot," said Judy Capili of Jackson Heights.

Spate Of Violence During Holiday Weekend In NYC

NEW YORK --
Six teenagers were wounded in a shooting spree near a popular Harlem park in a spate of violence during the holiday weekend that also left six dead and at least seven others wounded around the city.

Harlem residents were stunned by the fact that so many kids fell victim to violence Monday night. They were found wounded across several blocks and range in age from 13 to 18 years old. A teenage girl was grazed in the head, and four boys were shot once each; all were expected to survive.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the violence in and around Marcus Garvey Park and whether the shootings were related. Police suspect three gunmen were involved.

Police arrested a 15-year-old boy on weapons possession charges, but he has not been charged in the shootings. The boy ran from officers after the shootings and threw a .380-caliber pistol under a parked car. Police also said two shells of that caliber were found on one of the blocks where shots were fired.

An aunt of one of the victims said her nephew was an A-student who was an innocent bystander and had been at the park simply for a cookout. "He didn't have anything to do with it," Michelle Lyle said outside Harlem Hospital. "He's a good boy."

Despite the spike in violence, overall crime remains at a historic low, and city leaders were quick to place blame on illegal guns. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly noted an overall drop in crime year-to-date against record lows last year -- a 2.72 percent decrease citywide.

"The shootings in Harlem are evidence of the apparent ease with which teens are able to acquire illegal guns and to use them without regard to the consequences," Kelly said in a statement.

Community leaders gathered in Harlem Tuesday to urge parents to keep better watch over their children, and express outrage at the prevalence of illegal weapons on the streets.

"Another beautiful Harlem day has been ruined by gun violence," said state Assemblyman Keith L. T. Wright. "When it all comes down to it, we can only hope and pray that gun violence doesn't take another life in our community."

Three other men and a teenage boy were also shot in Harlem in unrelated incidents over the weekend. Police don't believe they are related to the Lenox Avenue shootings.

In other violence during the weekend, five men were killed in the Bronx and one in Brooklyn in separate incidents.

And five people were wounded Saturday afternoon on the main thoroughfare in the Jackson Heights section of Queens. An unknown suspect opened fire on the bustling street, apparently aiming for one person and hitting four bystanders. All were expected to survive.

The weekend violence seemed a throwback to more a violent time in New York.

"It was not terribly uncommon over holiday weekends to have multiple shootings, and in that sense it's very troubling," said Eugene O'Donnell, a professor of police studies at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. "There's no reason to believe we have an insurance policy, and that we can't return to the bad old days."
