Video Shows Alleged Killer Before, After Market Stabbing

NEW YORK -- Police appealed to the public for help on Friday in their search for a man accused of stabbing two women, one fatally, in an East Village supermarket on Feb. 29.

The NYPD released a surveillance video of the alleged killer entering the Key Foods supermarket and walking up a flight of stairs. After a brief delay, the video shows people running after him into the upstairs area, where he allegedly stabbed the victims, according to police.

Later, the video shows the man coming down the stairs holding a large knife.

The suspect, identified as James Gonzalez, is 42 years old and his last known address was 89 W. Tremont Ave. in the Bronx, police said.

The attack, which may have stemmed from an argument over money, happened inside a manager's office that was raised above the supermarket floor, according to police. A knife was found outside the store.

The Key Foods is located on Avenue A at 4th Street.

The slain woman, Tina Negron, 24, was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center after being stabbed in the torso. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The other woman, 27, was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center with wounds to the torso and leg, police said.

Both women were Key Foods employees.

Police Ask For Help In Solving Mother's Slaying

NEW YORK --
As many as 30 people could have witnessed the accidental shooting of a Brooklyn mother of three but nobody has stepped forward to identify the gunman, police sources said.

Nancy Williams, 27, of Gates Avenue, was just walking through a backyard playground while running an errand by her Bedford Stuyvesant home when she was struck and killed about 6 p.m. Sunday evening.

"She was an innocent bystander," said a police source. "We need people to come forward."

Investigators said they believe that a prior dispute led a gunman to shoot at someone by that playground behind 730 Gates Avenue in the Stuyvesant Garden Houses but he missed and struck Williams instead. At the time as many as 30 people were outside, many of them hanging around the playground, sources said.

The bullet hit Ms. Williams in the chest and she died after being rushed to Woodhull Hospital. She leaves behind an infant daughter, an 8-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter.

Police said anyone with information should call 1 800 577-TIPS. There is a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.

Random gunfire has led to the death of a Brooklyn mother of three.

3 Youths Stabbed, One Fatally, in Subways

Three teen-agers were stabbed yesterday, one fatally, in the subway system in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, the police said.

An 18-year-old youth was stabbed last night in the chest on the subway platform of the Astor Place station in Greenwich Village on the IRT Lexington Avenue line. The unidentified youth was pronounced dead on arrival at Bellevue Hospital shortly after 9 P.M. The police said they were questioning a suspect.

A 19-year-old man was stabbed at 3:30 P.M. on a No. 7 train between 61st Street and 53d Street in Woodside, Queens, said Albert O'Leary, a spokesman for the transit police. The victim, whose identity was not released, was in serious condition last night at Elmhurst Hospital.

Mr. O'Leary said a 17-year-old, Daniel Frett, of 192 Legion Street in Queens, was arrested in connection with the stabbing and charged with attempted murder, assault, riot, criminal possession of a knife and encouraging someone else to do the stabbing.

Mr. O'Leary said the police believe Mr. Frett acted with someone else who did the stabbing. He said the police were seeking a second suspect.

Witnesses told the police that the dispute began with an argument between two groups.

The third stabbing occurred just before 4 P.M. and also involved an argument between groups of young men, the police said. A 14-year-old boy was stabbed in the chest on the G train between the Franklin Avenue and Clinton Street stations in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

The youth, Jerome Drayton, of 10 Amboy Street, in Brownsville, was in serious condition at Brooklyn Hospital. The police said there were no arrests.

Man in Queens rooftop standoff hospitalized

RICHMOND HILL -- In Queens, a man is hospitalized and in custody, accused of attacking a rabbi with a machete and police with Molotov cocktails.

It happened on Hillside Avenue and 123rd Street in Richmond Hill.

Eyewitness News reporter Jaime Roth has more from Jamaica Hospital where the man is undergoing psychiatric evaluation

It started on Tuesday evening whe a man wielding a machete slashed a rabbi. Then, moments later, when police arrived, the suspect threw a Molotov cocktail at the officer's cruiser.

It looks like the rabbi was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He just happened to be walking by after getting off a train when the suspect snapped. Then, the chain of events unfolded.

A cop car burned on 123rd Street.

'I saw a guy on the rooftop just light a bottle of some liquid and throw it down," a resident said.

The unmarked car was torched by a molotov cocktail, tossed by a 21-year-old man who apparently "had a bad day."

"He seemed to be very distraught," NYPD detective Hassan Hamdy said. "He wasn't really keying in on anything in particular. He just didn't want to come down.''

It was ESU's job to get the suspect off the roof after he allegedly tossed the homemade explosives at the cops. And that was after he attacked the 45-year-old rabbi with a machete.

"Obviously a Jewish man with a nice beard with a big black hat, and it was very obvious who he was," a witness said.

The victim suffered a three-inch cut to his head before he escaped.

"He fought him off," the witness said. "He knocked the machete out of his hands. He picked up the machete. He came to his friend's house, and he said call the ambulance.''

And the police came to the scene as well, evacuating residents.

Eventually, the suspect was talked into surrendering. But what sparked the attack?

"He said he was having a bad day yesterday," Detective Robert Zajac said. "We were trying to tell him today is a different day, and we'll work it out with you.''

The suspect, identified as Felipe Velasquez, was transported to the hospital for evaluation and to be questioned by police. The rabbi did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

N.J. Bar Fight Escalates Into Fatal Shooting

NEW YORK -- An off-duty corrections officer fatally shot a gun-wielding man during a fight outside a strip club in New Jersey on Thursday, according to police.

Police said a fight at Florian's Nonstop Go Go bar spilled out onto Lyons Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. According to witnesses, several men were beating on one man. One of the attackers went a got a gun and fired it, according to police.

An off-duty Essex County corrections officer witnessed the altercation and intervened.

Police said the corrections officer identified himself to the man with the gun and told him to drop his gun. The gunman did not drop his weapon, was shot several times by the corrections officer and died, police said.

"All law enforcement officers are compelled to take action when they see criminality is taking place," Irvington Police Chief Michael Chase.

The dead man has been identified as 35-year-old Clarence Harris of Newark.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

N.J. Police Nab 91 Gang Suspects, One Gator

TRENTON, N.J. -- State Police and Plainfield police have arrested 91 alleged members of local gangs in a series of raids, authorities said.

The arrests happened in waves, with 46 people being nabbed between Jan. 23 and March 20, and 24 more arrested Wednesday and Thursday.

Police said they confiscated weapons, a stun gun and a bulletproof vest as well as large quantities of heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, ecstasy, Oxycontin and marijuana.

"Their reign of terror ended this morning when they woke up," a state police spokesman said Thursday.

New Jersey State Police also told WNBC.com's Brian Thompson that a live alligator was discovered in one of the raided homes. The alligator was taken to an animal shelter.

The alligator measured 3 feet. It is not clear if the alligator may have been kept for security, as a pet, or for some other reason.

Those arrested are allegedly members of two violent gangs linked to crack cocaine and heroin sales. Those local gangs call themselves the Libside Boys and the Clinton Avenue Posse.

The round up was called "Operation Five Spot" because there were five locations in Plainfield where the gang activity had become intense.

Police officials in Plainfield contacted State Police in January seeking help dealing with a burgeoning problem of drug-dealing and violence by reputed gang members, a source told WNBC.com's Brian Thompson.

The suspects are being hit with several charges, including selling drugs in a school zone. State police Captain Al Della Fave said one of the suspects was wanted on attempted murder.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine and Attorney General Anne Milgram announced a comprehensive new anti-crime strategy in October that specifically targeted gun and gang violence.

Though New Jersey is safer overall than it was a decade ago, the number of murders and gun-related crimes has risen, an escalation law enforcement officials attribute to the increasing presence of street gangs.

The most recent state police report on gangs showed 43 percent of New Jersey communities and all but one county reported evidence of gang activity.

Police: Mob Kills Man Trying To Protect Brother

NEW YORK -- Police said a 28-year-old man was killed by an angry mob Saturday as he tried to protect his brother.

Family members said Alex Cruz looked out the window of his family's apartment on Intervale Avenue and saw a crowd of 20 teens beating his older brother, Javier, on the street.

Javier Cruz yelled for his brother to stay upstairs. But he did not.

As Alex Cruz approached the gang of teens, they attacked and began stabbing him. The killing was caught by a security camera.

Alex Cruz never knew that his brother was able to escape and run for safety. He died on the steps of his apartment building from knife wounds to the neck and torso.

Neighbors said the gang of youths who attacked the brothers all appeared very young.

Detectives on Sunday were reviewing the security video and knocking on doors, searching for victims.

Police said it appears the victims were targeted at random and robbery did not appear to be a motive.

Family members said Javier Cruz is devastated by his brother's death.

"They was inseparable brothers," their cousin, Marisol Reyes, said. "They work together, they live together, they sleep in the same room, they do everything together."

Arrest Made In Stabbing Of Brooklyn Delivery Driver

NEW YORK -- Police have arrested a suspect in the stabbing of a 26-year-old Japanese restaurant deliveryman in Brooklyn Monday night. The incident happened in the Homecrest section.

Police arrested 31-year-old Zheng Hai Qing of Manhattan and charged him with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said the victim was stabbed multiple times in the chest, back and leg.

Police said the man was working at the time he was stabbed. When officers responded to the scene, they traced a trail of blood to the man’s car, which was found still running and with food in it.

Police have not said if robbery was a motive.

The victim is listed in critical condition at Lutheran Medical Center.

Boy 5, Killed In Queens Car Crash; 2 Men Sought For Questioning

NEW YORK - Police are looking for two young men who crashed their car into another vehicle Thursday morning, killing a 5-year-old boy.

The incident happened at 109th Avenue and 164th Place around 1 a.m., authorities said.

The males fled the scene of the crash on foot. They were driving a blue BMW, police said.

A detective at the scene said the men in the BMW likely purchased the car by stealing someone's identity. They said the vehicle is registered inSuffolk County.

The suspects left the keys in the car and apparently removed something from the trunk, police said. They were last seen walking towards 110th Avenue.

Police said the young victim, Jordan McLean, was ejected from a car occupied by his mother and another relative.

All three were transported to Jamaica Hospital, where the young boy was pronounced dead. The two adults are expected to recover.

An investigation is ongoing.
