I think this is a most awesome idea !!! To join or not to join at your own will. Notice the part that says it's promoting religion. Madeline O'Hare will surely be rolling around in her grave on this one.

School board votes to add Bible elective

ODESSA, Texas (AP) -- The school board in the West Texas town of Odessa voted unanimously to add a Bible class to its high school curriculum.

Hundreds of people, most of them supporters of the proposal, packed the board meeting Tuesday night. More than 6,000 Odessa residents had signed a petition supporting the class.

Some residents, however, said the school board acted too quickly. Others said they feared a national constitutional fight.

Barring any hurdles, the class should be added to the curriculum in fall 2006 and taught as a history or literature course. The school board still must develop a curriculum, which board member Floy Hinson said should be open for public review.

The board had heard a presentation in March from Mike Johnson, a representative of the Greensboro, North Carolina-based National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, who said that coursework designed by that organization is not about proselytizing or preaching.

But People for the American Way and the American Civil Liberties union have criticized the council, saying its materials promote religion.

Johnson said students in the elective class would learn such things as the geography of the Middle East and the influence of the Bible on history and culture.

"How can students understand Leonardo da Vinci's 'Last Supper' or Handel's 'Messiah' if they don't understand the reference from which they came?" Johnson said. The group's Web site says its curriculum has received backing in 292 school districts in 35 states.

In Frankenmuth, Michigan, a similar proposal led to a yearlong controversy before the school board voted in January not to offer such a course.

this whole removing religion from school and separation of state and church is a joke, when in states like NJ and SC, there are still blue laws, which means no business on Sunday for religious reasons. Then hand is placed onto bible for testimony in court.

and the other irony is if you read Leviticus, the same judicial laws used today apply.

and I think if kids want to get together and pray or discuss religion, they should! hey more non-hate based prayer groups means less shootings in the school

In God we trust on our money. Go figure the contradictories right ? But this, to me, solves everyones problem. It's a choice not mandatory. And as for the part about promoting religion, ummmmmmmmm churches on street corners. What do you think that promotes ?

yup but it's really up to us to make the changes and more involvement of parents regarding their child's schooling. I know my mom as busy as she was would still find out what's going on and make sure the right things and people were in place.

you figure your child spends about 8 hours a day in one place, use the time wisely.

The article says 6000 parents signed onto this !!! How amazing. What a message it is sending. And you're sooooooooo right on how much time they spend at school, use it wisely for sure. There are some kids out there who have never seen the inside of a church, know what a Bible looks like or who God and Jesus are. AND THEY NEED TO KNOW !!! This could be a most uplifting exprerience for these children. GOD NOT GUNS I SAY !!!!

and proper education of the bible is needed including the origin of most current one. because full understanding of scripture as in where historically originated from is important. because so many people have twisted the truth and origin that what's taught now is not all complete.

I just sat down recently and read first 5 books of bible from beginning to end and when I read the begats, I referred to map in back of bible and very eye opening.

now I'm reading book of mormons (since they nag so much)

but I want to see how it relates to other scriptures supposedly found.

and then moving on to Koran to see what all the hoopla is about and how it relates to first 5 books of bible.

LMBO on the begats !!!! Most current Bible ?? What is that ? And I would rather die a slow painful death than TOUCH the book of Mormon. That's is some scarey chit girl. You really should read their history and the way they practice before you start reading what they preach. I have a Koran. Funny thing is my Koran is written in Arabic ( I guess that's what it is) To read what all that means in English is written sooooooooooooo small lol. Are they really promising 70 virgins ???

but yup, I'm talking about the begats in Genesis in the most common King James Version and original Aramaic version, or really any version as that can't be changed.

what sickens me is the language couldn't even be maintained in new testament. there's no way the Messiah used words like "verily" "thus", "thou", those are all English scholars words, as the King James version was written by scholars he hired and many books omitted. ironically "amen" is an original Aramaic word.

so it's important to know that history first.

I've never even seen a koran, but I was curious as to why mormons are going out in urban areas to preach the word, and truly believe they are the chosen ones or part of it. so this I gotta read. because part of being prophet is words have to match actions. and it's hard for me to believe someone had a vision of someone and their incorrect name is used.

and I'm curious as to where this prophet Muhammed comes from that they believe is their follower. a lot of times, I'm finding it's a man on his own path doing his own thing. but in other cases, I can find matching examples that still exist today.

but knowledge is key, otherwise, you can easily be led into a cult if you're not aware of all involved.

I know where the begats are lol. I don't remember the reason that King James had it translated but I don't give a hoot that people say it was translated and all that hoopla. There is tooo much in it that is real. When you read it you can feel the power of God moving through you. I don't get that from a newspaper.

On the history thing that is exactly why I said read about Mormon history before you read that book. They were some bad bad folks lol and Joseph Smith was eventually murdered. Do you know that they encourage divorce if your spouse does not come around to the Mormon way of thinking???? Among other things. Yeppers girlie girl. Women have to wear these old ass undergarments and shit. Not everyone is allowed access to "the big church" in Salt Lake. Only special people. Don't get me going lol
