Woman Shot In Carjacking Attempt
Unborn Child Said To Be Doing OK
POSTED: 10:46 am EDT July 25, 2005
ROYAL OAK, Mich. -- A pregnant woman was rushed by ambulance to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital after she was shot during a carjacking on Friday night.
The woman, who is 4 1/2 months pregnant, was waiting in her Saturn SUV for a friend outside Ducky's Bar on Woodward Avenue in Pontiac when a man armed with a .38-caliber pistol walked up to her driver's side window and demanded her vehicle, police said.
Sgt. Jefferey Smith, of the Pontiac Police Department, said the woman put the vehicle in reverse to attempt to get away when the man "fired twice at the car, hitting her once."
The bullet struck the woman in her shoulder and traveled down her side, Local 4 reported. The woman was taken to Beaumont Hospital where sources said that she was partially paralyzed from her injury. Her unborn child was not injured and was said to be doing OK.
The gunman fled the scene of the shooting and hasn't been seen since, the station reported.
Police said he's described as black, in his 30s, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall, with long braids in his hair and wearing a dark blue Detroit Pistons jersey with red lettering.
Anyone with information that may lead to an arrest is asked to contact the Pontiac Police Department at (248) 758-3340.
The carjacking was the second in Pontiac this month that resulted in gunfire.
David Lee Bingham, 38, stopped for gas at a Sunoco station on July 5, while on his way to work, when he was carjacked by two men. The men appeared to flee the scene in Bingham's truck, but one of them followed Bingham into the station and shot and killed him as he called 911, according to police.
